I swear that I read somewhere in this forum (or maybe somewhere else) that Honda understates its horsepower rating and that the V6 actually produces more than the listed 278. I did a forum search but couldn't spot it. Perhaps I read it in an online review (edmunds, cnet, carconnection, etc.).

Can anyone re-enlighten me on this, as I'm curious.

Thanks!

If you look at the temple of vtec dyno videos, I believe that the Accord drivetrain is efficient so the horsepower to the wheels is close to the stated hp for both engines. It is all about efficiency. That's my take.

I believe that what was meant was that the J35Y1 variant in the Accord has 278 while the J35Y4 Y5,Y6 variant used in the 2014 Acura's have 310,290,290 hp respectively.

All the others have a compression of 11.5:1 vs 10.5:1 for the J35Y1 variant used in the Accord along with changes in the bore/stroke.

Presumption being the 3.5l engine could produce the increase in hp.

that's my take on it.

IIRC various members tested the v6 accord on a dyno and it showed that the v6 6at puts down approx 245whp and the v6 6mt puts down approx 250whp which translates to around 10 percent powertrain powerloss which is unheard of.

which leads to assumptions that either honda is really efficient or the engine rating is understated.

as for comparison camry v6 only puts down approx 210whp.

The understated HP may also help explain why it's do damn fast compared to other cars with similar engine specs. Some members here have speculated that it's to differentiate Acura from Honda. The V6 Accord is the fastest (straight line) car Honda produces. Possibly faster than anything Acura has too.

I doubt the engine is underrated. Chassis dyno's should never be used to reference crankshaft power output, only use to compare tuning/parts replacement with before/after results on the same dyno. Never cross compare either. Else you can tilt the interpretation into whichever way you want.

The Acura TL manual was faster I believe. 5.2 0-60. But yes, the Accord sure is the fastest now

:jawdrop: really? i mean i know my car is fast.. but really? 290?
You'd be happy to hear that when igeek4u says "about 290", he really means 375 to be exact. Merry Christmas.

I'm feeling swelling in my pants.

V6 make me happy too! :) power is goooooood

You guys are making me want to go get the v6! Thought about the '15 F-150 Lariat/FX4, but I'm thinking I'll wait on that until they come down off their high/new prices in a year or so. Might trade the Sport ('13 w/ 17,6xx miles; great condition) for a v6 with the same amount of mileage

Car is fast but there are lots of faster cars now that can keep up. Off the line this car does well. Even the big Ford pickups can give this car a run. Think I want a V8 next..lol

If Honda is reporting the SAE Certified Power rating of the V6 engines (278), which I believe they have been since 2005, this includes the drag of the PS, belt driven accessories, alternator, etc. It also includes the actual exhaust manifold that is to be sold with the car not just tubes. All fluid levels must be at true levels seen in actual operation.

SAE Certified Power rating is measured at the crank so that's BHP or SAE net power per J1349. 1349 doesn't take into account the trans loss component.

Since these numbers here (257) are from the wheels and includes trans losses, etc., as was stated earlier there is NO LOSS (OK 7% vs. rough average of 15-20%). Sumpin' is not addin' up. Is this test car stock? EDIT: read the comments in the youtube and it says it was stock, production dealer car with 200 miles on the odometer.

The J35Y2 has got to have more bhp.

Or Honda has the magic combination of engine/transmission the has minimal losses. Which is something in itself but "ya cannot defy the laws of Physics Captain" Scotty

This is just an exercise and I personally don't mind if it's one way or the other, but it is/would be nice to know what really is under the hood and at the ground.

Are manufactures required to list exact HP/TQ figures? If not, I'd see it hard for them to be sued for under-advertising the numbers. There have been multiple dynos that show similar numbers.
