Greetings,
Newbie here - but I've had a 98 V6 Coupe Auto for 5 years now. No trans problems - knock on wood! I've enjoyed reading the forums and now have a couple of questions. I'd actually like to get a Manual V6 Coupe, but all I see are the I4 models out there on Cars.Com and Autotrader. They had to have made the V6 Manual Coupe right? I'd like the V6 for the extra HP, but a 2nd question would be can an I4 be modified enough to compete with the V6?

Why would you get a new car? :thumbsdow Why wouldn't you get a 5 speed manual swapped in there? That would save a lot of money dude.... :screwy:

Man, you would have a devil car if you did that: a 6th gen, V6, 6-speed... That would be sick... pretty sure they didn't make them though... get a 7th gen and you'll be happy with it.

or to save some money just get a tranny swap. Sounds like you're already happy with your 6th gen...why get a different 6th gen? Just drop a 5 speed manual.

I wouldn't risk it personally. It's a huge project to convert an auto to a manual. Unless they have a kit that I don't know about, this project sounds like it's way more trouble than it's worth. You're talking buying new interior parts from a manual car, like the console piece, pedals, linkages that go through the console to the transmission, a transmission, tranny mounts, probably pulling the engine to find where you are going to run everything. If you want it to look like a manual from the factory, I believe you need to replace the gauge cluster. Sounds like a lot of work to convert to a manual transmission, with the time and money, I would say upgrade.

yea, the 6th gen v6, coupe and sedan, never came with a MT from factory. those people you hear out there with a v6 MT did a tranny swap.

I'd be real nervous about a tranny swap going well. So could an I4 Manual be brought up to 200 HP inexpensively? I'd really miss the V6 power...or I could just go up to the 7thGen as Conleyjm suggests, but I love the 6thGen coupe body more.

the Auto trans on the 6th gen is weak to begin with, adding more power is a surefire failure.

get a 7th gen if you want more power with the AT.

If you really want a 6th gen, look for a 4cyl, MT and build it. You can then put a SPEC performance clutch in (which will hold 200hp without breaking a sweat)

No not easily. That said with all bolt-ons (i/h/e), you may get to 170-180hp at the crank. Add a vtec controller and cam gear and get it dyno tuned and you may get another 10hp.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm off to find a 5thGen Prelude engine and a 6thGen Accord coupe MT to swap it into...:dunno:
For the money (and headache) you're going to drop on that you might as well just keep the car you said you love. Just put $1500 or so in the bank in case the trans craps out and go enjoy your car.

i came from a 6spd MT in my old rx8. when i got my v6 4spd AT, i really missed the MT. it's been 3 1/2yrs. since then and i STILL miss the MT...

i4 cannot compete pound for pound with a built v6. Common sense. Also, it is actually a 6spd swap if you were to do the swap over. I don't know why people keep saying a 5spd swap, but there is no 5spd tranny that will connect to the j30a.

you would need one of hondas v6 6 speed transmissions such as a cl type s, 7th gen, tl, the number of swaps is growing. there are atleast 5 i know of and even a sedan that got swapped. itll run you between 2-3k its not as big of a project as everyone makes it seem though

i've even heard of some people using the 7th gen 6spd MT for the swap.

Yep, those, and any of the 04-08 acura TL 6 speeds. There are some subtleties with the shift linkage setups but they can all be made to work. There are some electrical differences too that can be corrected with a wiring harness that's available privately. Work dependent, I'm hoping to start mine this month and will do a thread. I'm dying with excitement to get it in, my torque converter and differential are riding the downward spiral at the moment.

if i had the cash, i'd definitely get a swap done myself to a 6spd. for my 6th gen v6 :).

if i had oodles of cash, i'd also get me a j32 engine from a TL, haha.
