Right, I have posted here with a few other guestions and such, all of which have been answered..:).. But now I have a new problem or atleast worry.. I have been trying to measure my gas milage and well, thus far, it's bad..

1996 Accord EX, 2 Door.

To start let me say I purchased this car from a place who buys cars from auto auctions so I have no history on the car other then the Carfax report which was clean.. When I got the car it had just shy of 70,000 miles on it.. I filled the tank and reset the little trip odometer a week ago.. Well, on the 1st 1/4 of a tank I think I got about 100 miles.. So I was pumped, thinking I would get 400 miles to the tank... Wrong..

Right now, I am at probally a 3/8th of a tank and have around 215 miles traveled, most of which is Highway.. Probally 50 miles city and 165 Highway. I have been getting into the habit of doing a steady 60-65 on the highway and trying not to be to hard on the accelerator..

Well, last night I took a trip into the city with a friend, I had a little more then 1/2 a tank left, I was using cruise controll most of the way down doing a steady 65 and thought I was doing ok, but then I let my friend drive and to say the least I wasen't happy.. He was doing between 70 - 75 for a while and by the time we got home the tank was basically right above 3/8th of a tank..

So with a little estimating I am thinking I can probally get... ohh.. 275 outta what is left in the tank.. Mabey 300..

17 Gallon tank / 300 miles = 17 MPG.. :thumbsdow

My mom is not a do it your selfer and thinks their is nuthing I can do to bring this up.. Please tell me she is wrong because I am about to be driving atleast 250 miles a week soon and with gas prices said to be going back up soon.. :boohoo: :bawl:

Thanks,
Chad..

Seefate, i wouldn't be so quick to judge exactly your mpg by just looking at the fuel gauge and estimating how much you can get out of what's left. you should go to the gas station, see how much you fill up and divide the number of miles by the amount of gas. i've owned two other hondas in addition to the accord, and from my experience, right after the fill up, it seems to be getting great gas mileage for the first quarter tank. after that everything goes down hill, the needle drops pretty fast, until the last quarter tank, where it slowly goes down so it all kind of evens out. i have no explanation for that but that's what i observe, maybe it's the shape of the tank. but anyways, it would look like you're not getting great mileage, but like dads-car said, you never fill up all 17 gallons, plus you have a reserve of like 2 or 3 gallons when the light goes on. so really, just take it to the gas station to find out.

Well, good point I probally woulden't be filling up all 17 gallons every time..

As far as the 500km goes, I dunno what the conversion from Kilometers to Miles is but I dunno, I guess I was expecting a tank to get me a little better then 17 - 18 MPG..

If about 300 miles per tank is good then I guess I will just suck it up and shut up but I am a bit of a freak when it comes to stuff like this...

Reguardless tho, I still love the car.. :p

EDIT: Asian beat me to the Submit button... I never thought about that either that the shape of the tank and such could cause the gauge to drop quicker at some points.. Alright, then I am going to drive it untill the gas light comes on, fill it up and see how much it takes then run the math off of thoes numbers instead of picking ball park numbers..

Major thanks guys, this really helps me.. :notworthy

Yup, when you fill up, the number of miles you had driven divided by the gallons you put in is your true gas mileage. I suspect you are actually getting about 300/14 or 300/15 (20MPG) or thereabouts. It's not good, but sad to say it's not horribly far off from what I've seen other cars with engines similar to yours go.

1000km = 621.4 miles so 500km = 310.7 or so?

yea, sometimes when i fill up, i can get about 150 miles at 3/4 tank, but when i get to half tank, it's only about 220 miles. i drive down till about 1/4 tank left, and i look at the meter, and it only fills up about 11.5 gallons out of the 17 gallons and end up with about 27 mpg 300 miles or so. also for me, after getting off the highway after a 25 mile drive or so would lower the needle by about a notch or two but after restarting the car the next day when cold, it would be a notch higher. there are a lot of stuff that affects it. and even if you don't get the mpg you'd expect the first time, just remember that it's your first time. even if the engine has been broken in miles ago, i think it might adjust to the way you drive to a certain extent, although i could be wrong.

Seefate.. the only way to get the mpg is to fill your car to the brim and zero your clock (mileometer). Then, the next time you fill up, devide the amount of fuel you have used by the amount of miles you have covered, or cheat as I do and use this website mpg calculator.. ;) :)

I don't know about your but my '97 V6 I got almost 25 MPG. Highway though. I don't drive in the local that much so I don't know the mileage for local.

Do you guys think 25 MPG is a right mileage per gallon for V6 Accord?

I'd venture to say it's pretty decent for a V6 Accord from 97. Not the best but not the worst...when we had the carwash customers would complain their 6th gen V6's only got low-mid 20's :dunno:

Sounds pretty good to me. Considering if I drive my mom's '02 I4 Accord SE I can get around 25 mpg. (This is after she's driven it a lot, and then I drive highway miles) Normally she gets below 23 mpg. But when I drive it I'm putting highway miles on it, as opposed to her rush hour and city miles.

Well iam not sure what to say about ur milage but i have 98 dx with the 2.3 sohc(non vtec)135 hp........it has 188,000kms on her with a 4 spd auto.....and iam only getting about 18/19 mpg's US out of it........i was told that the city rating is 22 mpg.I have only had it for over 2 mths now,i will have to wait to see if it improves.

Old thread, but would like to add that the 5th gen Accord only has a 16 gallon tank.
