I was thinking lately of getting a manual EX sedan for the giggles.

I am wondering how the parts & maintenance would be like on the manual transmission for someone doing it themselves in their garage.

Would like to get input from those who wrenched a clutch on their own in a home garage instead of taking it to a shop.

Thanks

Good idea. Get one that comes with a MT from factory. What is your drive like? If you live in the city and fight with stop&go traffic, lots of 2-3 changes in bumper to bumper situations, then cost of clutch plates and synchros may exceed the cost of the occasional ATF flush. If the traffic is not heavy, if you do not have to drive 20 blocks with stop signs on each of them, if there are few gear changes, then MT will likely be less costly. It is possible that you can drive the car to the ground with the original clutch plate or drop a thousand bucks every 5 years.

I have replaced my own, but not on a 9th gen. Basically you replace the throw out bearing, clutch disc, and pressure plate. Depending on the condition of the flywheel, it may need to be turned. Also, if the rear main seal is leaking it needs to be replaced as well. At the same time replace the transmission fluid. If you use Honda OEM parts it will be more but after market will be around $250 to $300.

Forgetting the biggest factor here, the driver. Honda OE clutches in a pass car configuration can last a long time, even in stop and go traffic. It's not uncommon to see OE clutches go 150-200K easily, even in a mix of city/hwy driving, with a seasoned manual driver with good habits. Resting your foot on the clutch while driving, or keeping the clutch depressed at red lights will shorten the life of the throw out bearing and clutch.

If you are a good driver with good habits, you won't even have to worry about the clutch or related parts.

The MT fluid replacement is something I'd add to a maintenance list. A drain and fill every 20-30K with a couple of qts of Honda MTF.
