Hi Guys,

Well this was bound to happen. Buying a car in winter time is the worst. I had some dirty water freeze on my trunk, and I guess it thawed out but the dirt in it had settled. Long story short, I guess when I was drive the Ice melted and water moved the dirt around as I accelerated, turned, and stopped. Now the brand new trunk as jagged scratches. Nail test suggest it is threw the clear coat and specs of dirt are embedded in the paint. I guess this weekend hopefully it is warm and I can clay them out and polish/wax the trunk.

Anyone has any suggestions other than buffing a brand new car?

Thanks.

If you are through the clear then no amount of compounding/polishing will fix it.

If you are not through the clear then you can clay it and compound it then polish it and it should look better than new.

Or go to honda and pick up a small paint pen. I picked one up to fill in a scratch on my hood and it came out good. I dipped a tooth pick in the touch up paint and then let it drip into the scratch. It evened out and filled in nicely!

Or just let go and accept the fact that the car will not be new forever. It's just a car. It's not alive like you. Use the car and scratch it. It's fun. It's meant to be used and scratched. It likes to be scratched. When you are looking back at your life one day, you won't remember how you scratched your car. So why care about it now? Fix it if you need to to sell it.

First scratch always cuts the deepest! But, yeah I agree with you! It is no big deal I will live.

Yeah I have several scratches on my car as well, swirls and stuff on the clearcoat. It sucks at first but you realize it's just a car...

I feel your pain...

After nit picking the oil change guys to death this last Sunday.

Soon after I left there about a mile down the road. I decide I better just be sure and double check that oil level. Well when I pulled off into the dealer entrance I didn't see the huge chain they set across the entrance on the weekends and drove right into it!

Put 2 6" scratches into my clear coat right on the hood.

Oil level was OK though. :bawling:

2,500 wet sand grit, compound, and wax will fix that.

One thing that keeps getting me is the concrete stoppers at the end of parking spots. Sometimes they sit too high and I ride the front bumper up onto them. I can't see how far to pull up to it. Can't be good for it. This car sits low to the ground it seems.

i kinda feel like being a troll so :

1) why was there an extremely dirty puddle of water sitting on the trunk of your brand new car?
2) why didn't you clean/hose it off instead of leaving it and letting it freeze?
3) why aren't you cleaning the ice off your car? (i HATE when people don't clean off snow/ice off their cars and drive around like that. it's extremely unsafe to other motorists at highway speeds.)
4) im going to go out on a limb and guess it was the chunk of ice's jagged surface sliding around as it defrosted that caused the scratches.. not the "dirt" in it. especially because your saying its completely through the clear. otherwise there was more than just "dirt" in the water, like maybe some gravel or twigs

anyway, post some pics of the damage. we would all like to help with correcting your paint problems if it's a viable option

After you do your polishing, buy some good sealant to protect the paint for the future.
I hate getting the car in winter months. As much as I would like to have done this it already cold and no more day light after work. I may just find a good detail shop and pay them 100 bucks to seal and wax it for me and buff the scratches out.

1) I think it was likely a limestone dripping from driving under an old railroad bridge. Car it self is not dirty.

2) Didn't even look.

3) I hate them too, and no there was not tick layer of ice just droplets. Weather has been retarded with 30-50 degree swings over night.

4) No. But there is my neighbors tree that is dropping leaves all over the place. I do my best to get those off.

I will take a pic later.

My buddy is going to install a clear bra. We tested what it would look like over the scratch and it makes it very undetectable.

I know its a little late for a clear bra now but at least it will protect it from the elements and the scratch should be undetectable at trade in time.
