Previously posted in another forum, but just found this one. Anyone ever heard of this Diamond Coating Protective Package? Is it worth it? I am getting rid of a 2020 loaded Subaru Legacy in order to purchase a new Accord, and the dealer claims they've added this already, increasing the advertised MSRP figure by almost $2000.

They did something like that when I got my 2018 down in NC (supposedly because the tree sap down there is bad). Pretty sure the damn thing had swirl marks and rust spots on it within a few months - both of which were supposed to be protected against with whatever bullshit treatment they said they had to charge me because they apply it to all of their cars. Personally, I think any dealership that forces you to pay for that crap isn't worth buying from.

I'm with you there. Anyone else out there with similar stories? I am likely going to use my Costco membership to aid in buying at a different dealer, as I know Costco has a TON of clout in the industry. I would think that a dealer would rather avoid a call from Costco with a customer complaint!

They claimed mine has something similar and refused to remove it but I get them down to about half the cost of it.

I have started using a product called TLC2 by The last coat and it's a heck of a lot cheaper and super easy to put on. Not pushing or selling just a product a friend told me about and I like. You literally wipe it on and back off.

For $2K you should be getting a high quality, professionally applied (in a clean room) ceramic coating.
And a year's supply of unlimited car detailing! I just don't like them quoting the MSRP on their website as the price of the car, then pulling the old "bait and switch" attempt to lure the buyer, charging for something not listed but claiming as "already applied and not negotiable." That is HORSE HOCKEY in my book.

Agreed on that. Don’t add add on items without buyer request.

IMHO, a dealership cannot make you pay for their add on’s, but you forfeit the warranty they offer. Not a big deal in my opinion because you still benefit from the betterment the add on gives. That being said, it’s a very different buying experience today compared to recent history.

It used to be everything was negotiable, maybe not anymore. My suggestion is to see what you can get out of them. Try watching YouTube videos if you haven’t yet and see if you can learn more about the buying experience in today’s weird world.

I have told them " OK order me a new car without it and I will wait" when they pulled the " we can't remove it" game. Some how they manage to offer a discount and remove it.

Why would you get rid of the legacy? I myself do not like how cheap subarus are, but everyone and their dead dog's 3rd cousion's flea's microbe's atoms wants AWD anymore because of their monumentally unskilled driving. The Accord doesn't have AWD. . . yet. The Camry does.

I’m a pretty skilled driver 😉

That's the point. They put a $2000 price on something they spent $25 on and when you negotiate it down to $1000, you feel like you got a great deal. Meanwhile you're not paying attention to getting robbed on your trade and 15 other made up fees. The table is titled. The game is rigged.

I don’t know. Personally I wouldn’t add any add one for $2000. No matter how pretty it makes the car look.

$2k is AWD money. Unless that is spent on AWD, or something you actually get to enjoy everyday, like ELS / ELS like sound system, or factory options that you actually find useful, personally I wouldn’t do it.

I’d tell them to take it off, or you’ll buy it from someone else. This is what I do when some dealers tell me they already have the protection package installed.

Sound like low cost, low effort, high profit snake oil to me.

In March a dealer told me a “mandatory” ding and scratch insurance policy on my MDX was non-negotiable. I told them everything was negotiable, crossed out the entire deal they offered and wrote a figure with “out the door” after it and told them to distribute the funds as they saw fit, but that’s all I would be paying for the deal. It worked. Then the nimwits allocated over $500 to that insurance policy that they were selling for $399 initially. I read the policy, it was refundable if not used and canceled within 30 days. Yup, I got over $500 back a couple weeks later. I doubt they learned anything from it.

I was a general manager of a Porsche/Audi/BMW dealership and we were presented with this type of product. It cost about $70, you pay a guy about $40-$50 to put it on and then you charge what you want. It’s not a ceramic, it’s a polymer and the way that they give you the guarantee is they expect you to bring it back for a “recharge“ once a year which means they just put more stuff on. It’s a worthless trap designed to just increase dealer margin. I agree with the above, Meguires or Turtle wax Hydro ceramic wax is 15 bucks, and is a wipe on /wipe off and lasts at least six months. Do that instead. Essentially, never buy anything that the dealer adds to the sticker.

Can vouch for The Last Coat. Works well. And you can put it on everything, including the windows.

For less than $10.00 buy a spray bottle of Turtle Wax ceramic spray. It is a hell of a product, makes your paint look fantastic and lasts a long time - two coats a day apart and Turtle Wax states that under normal conditions the product will last 12 months.
I second this as I use the Turtle Wax line of ceramic products on my Accord. Great products at reasonable prices.
