Hi guys. The manual recommends you stop filling your tank once the Gas pump nozzle jerks,(to allow some space for expansion) I used to do this until encouraged by my brother, I filled the tank till I could see the gas.

Result...

I now drive about 80+miles before the needle starts to move from the full position! What do you think of this practice?:dunno:

I fill up until it goes *click* and then I give it one more *click* to make sure it was actually full.

My best friend's family all drive Japanese vehicles. They purchased a new Honda van a while back and, like he always did on their previous vehicles, my friend's father topped it off/put as much as he could in. Then started down the road.

After a few miles, he soon realized that the fuel gauge was dropping like a rock and, as he happened to be near a Honda dealer, pulled in.

The mechanic came up to him a few minutes after bringing it in, "Sir, do you fill up the gas tank all the way to the top?"

"Yeah, how did you know that?"

"Because your gas cap was completely blown off and you lost half a tank of gas."

Because of how vehicles pressurize the tank these days, you really should stop at *click* and not try to put as much in as possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if your overall MPG dropped.

In case you were not aware of it, doing this is what damages the carbon canister that is the heart of your evaporative emissions system. Hopefully, one incident will not kill the canister, but I can assure you that repeated incidents like this will kill that canister--without which you cannot pass state emissions tests.

Although I can't tell you what the replacement of a Honda carbon canister would cost, I can tell you that on Toyotas, replacement of that canister, with labor, tends to run about $400.00--and this is not covered by any car maker's warranty because it constitutes owner negligence.

Traditionally, Hondas have no room left in the gas tank when the pump "clicks off", and while you should not attempt to force more gas into the tank on any make of car, I believe that this practice would be particularly injurious on Hondas, due to their tank configuration. Let's hope that you have not already caused damage and that you will heed my advice for future fill-ups.

ya im that kinda of a person lol ... i fill up like at least another gallon after it clicks

Question that I never thought about... I love having people pump my gas for me.

I fill it up until the pump shuts off automatically. I then add more gas until the cents is a double number (e.g. .00, .11, .22, etc.).

I was seafoaming my motorcycle the other week and decided to use about a 1/8 bottle of seafoam in a full accord tank every oil change or so just to keep everything running smooth. I filled up the tank, drove home, and was going to siphon out a little fuel into a gas can to mix in the seafoam and fill it back into the tank. I got my siphon pump and hose and shoved the full length of the hose into the accord's tank (about 5 feet) and the end of the hose still wouldn't reach the fuel.

Just how long is the accord's tank spout? I bet you could fit another gallon in there... Unless of course there's some anti-siphon security device I'm not yet aware of :dunno:

Personally though, I wouldn't recommend filling the tank past the first two 'clicks' either. The vapors that evaporate off the fuel can expand quite significantly, and unless properly vented, can cause some major damage.

Thanks very much for your informative answer, I'll repent, hope i'm doing so on time.

I stop when it clicks to be safe.

When I run on empty, I stop once it gets to $5. Filling it up over $5? Thats crazy talk.

I always get onto my wife because her car mysteriously is out of gas when she reccomends that we take her car....

I'm usually cool with filling up her car when we are out, but not when the gas light is on when I start the car.

Haha she's smart.

But what I mean, is that I'm in Jersey... so I don't even have to exit my car when I want to get gas. :)

I wait until it clicks, then fill up to the next dollar.

For the record, I have filled up all hondas acuras and others all the way to the cap a few hundred times. I have only had 1 issue in 4 years of doing this to a few hundred cars. 1 time I had a fuel tank vent dump some fuel into the charcoal canister up front and throw a CEL. I have never ever heard of caps blowing off, that seems HIGHLY unlikely, (and hard to believe) from what I know. Just want to share what I know as fact as I have a lot of experience fueling H&A.

A couple of years ago before I had the Accord, I had a Ford Explorer (93), I was at a Exxon gas station and was filling up as normal, well I decided to keep fueling even after the click on the gas pump...........boy was that the biggest mistake of my life!!. I did not realize I was spilling GAS! under my truck, literally it gushing from beneath and it was flooding. I freaked out!! The guy pumping ahead of me was freaking out, looking at me like a fool! I was lucky that the owner's of Exxon didn't even realize I've spilled so much gas. I placed my top back on and balled out. I learned my lesson!! Do not attempt fueling more gas after click on gas pump..you will regret you did. I did!

...RTFM, why is it that there are so many of you that think you know more about your car than the people who built it? If Honda recommends you stop at the first click, then they obviously have a reason to make this guideline, why go against their recommendation? I really don't understand a lot of you guys...
...and then you go on and blame the manufacturer for issues that, often, are the result of NOT reading the *9$#^&$ manual...

Well, in Jersey, the guys usually fill it way past the click in order to reach an even number, especially if you're paying cash since cash is cheaper (usually). That way they don't have to worry about change, but as we learned, it' bad for your car.

Accord4dahuneys: Years ago, I had no idea you weren't allowed to pump you own gas in NJ by LAW, the station attendants were ignoring me for 5 minutes, so I jumped out of the car and started pumping my own gas. Well, the pump was defective or unique to NJ attendants because it had a hard spring that made forcing the nozzle in hard. When I finally forced it in, gas started coming right out of it onto my car and pavement! Since the spring was so hard, I couldn't force it in (it was half way out), and I hadn't even pulled the trigger yet. I freaked out and bailed. Never again!
