Hey y'all,

I was just wondering, through your personal experience, as to which brand you would consider the best quality/"bang for your buck" out of the aftermarket headlamp manufacturers?

So far I've come across TYC, Eagle Eyes, & Depo.

These will be used in a retro, so I want a good dependable lamp that will seal back up properly - not causing me condensation issues.

Also, eBay vs. OEM fog light kits...is it really worth the extra $200 for OEM? Has anyone had problems with the eBay kits? Suggestions/opinions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Well if you want one with projectors already in it I'll vouch for spec-D tuning headlights.

Thanks for the suggestion but those sound like an aftermarket projector housing that utilizes cheap halogen projectors. I only retro with OEM or OEM-Replica projectors suited for HID bulbs.

I just need to find a good reputable aftermarket brand for an extra pair of headlamps

I have hids in mine. But you're welcome! I have my original housings if that's what you're looking for.

I am currently in the process of retroing some Spec-D tuning headlamps (blackhoused) and the quality has been pretty good. You only need to put them in the oven for 6-8 minutes on 250 degrees. I have also been peeling off the old butyl tape so I can reseal them properly. A word of advice, the tape is MUCH easier to peel off when it is warm - but you can use a hair dryer for this.

lol thanks for the advice, Mitchell - but I'm not new to retrofitting - I've been doing it for a few years now ;) G'luck with yours though buddy

A friend of mine used TYC. I heard Depo is like 95% fitment. Otherwise I would just stick with OEM. BTW good job going with a retro instead of those eBay ricer lights.

Not trying to argue. But just wanted to say I get complemented on my "ricer" lights almost daily.

OP what shrouds do you normally use in your retros? The morimotos?

Morimoto is a brand of projector, if the OP was going to use Morimoto projectors he would likely get the Mini Gatling Gun shroud for free with purchase, he would also have the option for several other shrouds but they typically cost 15-50 dollars depending on the shroud used.

My friend ken from theretrofitters likes to use the brand tyc because the fitment is good and the ball joints inside are metal so makes it harder to break and that's a pretty big deal since I've worked with many headlights and the oem or other aftermarket ball joints always manage to break on my and I would have to use jb weld to fix it

Oops yeah I meant projectors. Are the Gatling gun shrouds the ones that look like the transformer style?

Here is a picture of the Mini Gatling Gun:

And a picture of the full sized Gatling Gun:

I have the Mini Gatling shroud, I do like the full sized ones though. Maybe I'll upgrade before resealing the headlights.

lol sorry y'all, been away all day now that classes started back up :-\

Thanks again Keith for the excellent deal on your OEM lamps! OEM are my favorite to retro with because I know they are perfect fit and the best quality (for the most part, like Tom had said, I have read that the ball joints have a tendency to break under the weight of a projector/removal process of the reflector).

As of right now, my retro plans are:

Keith's OEM Headlamps | OEM TSX Low-beam w/ clear lens | OEM Osram D2S CBI 5,000K | OEM Matsushita Gen V D2S Ballasts | E55-R Shrouds | Morimoto 9006 Harness

In the near future I may consider upgrading to a quad retro using Mini H1's but as of right now I am just going to finish the TSX's and get myself back into an HID setup! I have been running OEM (Audi A6) HIDs since 2008 so it is very hard for me to adjust back to halogen lol

Thanks for all of your inputs on the aftermarket headlamps! Great knowledge to know :)
