I believe that gauge is only a manifold pressure gauge calibrated for MPG. To get real life MPG divide gallons pumped into miles driven.

Car computer vs. pump is within 2~4% with car always claiming to burn less, and pump always claiming to sell more. Pumps are never 100% accurate, they have tolerances, too. Let's split the difference.

Mine is consistently 7-10% optimistic. I can't speak to pump accuracy tolerances but I would assume they are required to be a LOT more accurate. BTW, I fill up at the exact same pump every time unless I am traveling so my variations, whatever the source, are not caused by different pumps metering differently.

I do really wish the mileage gauge was more accurate, or at least could be adjusted or could self learn to match with real world experience.

And to the OP: 15 miles is not nearly enough of a run to expect the gauge to measure anything close to accurate. Run it 100 or more, fill up and do the math and see where you land.

These dash recorded MPG's after a few miles always crack me up. What a lame excuse to show inflated numbers. I almost NEVER look at what the dash says I'm getting anymore. As @WhiteOrchid said, mine were consistently higher on the dash than my manual calculations.

No mods at all and I’ve gotten ~40-41mpg in my V6-6AT measured at fill up on a ~400 mile (one way) trip a few months ago. I think that’s my best that I’ve actually measured (I don’t measure every fill up). It was hot so A/C was on, no Econ mode as I don’t like it, using cruise control at ~70mph for most of it and luckily no traffic issues or delays/congestion.

For a normally weekly commute (so little variance in driving - same route, same time of day etc), the display computed overall average at fill ups is usually quite close to what I figure at the pump, in my experience at least (within +/- 1 mpg).

But the computed average displayed over a short drive is kind of meaningless, since it’s being re-computed every minute or few minutes and is only meaningful, IMO, over a steady cruise speed and single long distance drive. If you have the display reset every fillup, then those overall averages may be close to the pump averages.

Forget the computer. 630 miles on one tank is misleading or inflated? You figure it out.

I can easily get 36 mpg in steady highway driving in my V6 EXL Sedan and I trust that the computer is accurate in that. I'm talking about reported over 100s of miles, not instantaneous reading.

Nice - how many gallons you used in that 630 miles might give an accurate meaningful number - but that is the complete opposite of a 15 mile reading on the dash.

I averaged 35 mpg exactly on a 4000 mile trip last summer. Mostly (90+%) highway at 65-73 mph. Trip computer agreed exactly which surprised me. Never had exact agreement on a single tank. Completely stock 2013 sedan. My 2005 Camry V6, with 60 fewer hp, never cracked 30 mpg.

Do the actual math and you'll think otherwise.

I've been able to get my dash to read over 50MPG in my 25 mile commute to work in my 2016 Accord I4-CVT. However, my tank averages are 36-38MPG tracking with Fuelly.

My dash on the overall tank is usually within 1MPG of my computed mileage.

Really depends on how I drive my 6-6,
highway long distance while listening to an audio book @ speed limit on cruise? ~35
city driving ~27

If I keep below speed limit in right lane with all the Prius's ~40 is possible....

really not bad for a 300hp v6 that can rip off a 5.5 0-60 and hang with luxo cars ranging 20-30k above its price range while providing the same level of lux/tech, but I digress.

Most cars today get their best fuel economy around 50-55 mph. That is right at the point where speed and wind resistance start to reveal its exponential relationship. At 55 mph an Accord might need a whopping 8-9 whp. As speed increases, that number rises quickly.

The next question regards how efficiently the engine can produce that power; that ultimately translates to fuel economy. As a general rule, smaller engines (up to a point) are more efficient, which is why the 2.4-liter and the 10th gen's 2.0 and 1.5 turbos - when on very low boost - get better fuel economy. Most Honda's V6 owners can manage low to mid 30s on the highway without trying too hard - on regular fuel. Not bad for a medium-large car with this much power.

Wow, lots of exaggerations in this post.

Come back with real world drive and fill up calculated numbers, and tell me what you actually got with that 6-6. I can guarantee you will not see 35. NO WAY.

I can usually squeeze between 17 and 18 gallons in my tank. (bad, I know).
I agree, 15 miles is not enough distance gauge any real numbers. If that were the case then my best mileage in my V6 is 42. But again, not accurate.

Man, how long has it been since I posted last?

@Das Chicken, he has a V6 Accord, manual trans. with some home made aerodynamic body parts, his posted best was 47 mpg. per tank, which is how you should measure.
Close, still haven't hit a 47 MPG tank. My best tank so far was on a trip to Montana in which I put almost 5K miles on my car in a week. I got 46.1 MPG. That tank I did 670.0 miles and filled 14.521 gallons. I could have easily took it past 700 miles, but the availability of gas stations in the next 50 miles was flakey. My best trip was also on that Montana trip, I had several driving shifts where I passed 50 MPG, (even my older brother passed 50 with my instruction!) I didn't keep the best track of those high mileage runs, but I have a picture on my phone of 51.0 MPG, so i'm going to go with that. That tank was a lot of 55-70 MPH truck assisted pulse and glide. I would pulse up to the truck(which was going 60 something), about 1.5 seconds behind, then coast all the way back to 55 or until the truck got too far away, then drop it back in gear and accelerate again. Even without trucks to assist with the pulse and glide cycles, I could reduce the speed range to 55-65 and get high 40s, sometimes low 50s.

There was also an 8 mile or so trip I did in Montana with a 400-500 foot elevation change where I got 61.3 MPG(or 60.0, have multiple pictures), but that is cheating so I won't count that.

Um, actually...

Oh yeah, and I got to ride my aunt's Grom while I was there. I have a picture on my desktop computer of me going superman on it, but this is the best i've got with me, so here you go.
