I have a 2009 EX V6. I have less than thirty thousand miles and I am the original owner. I have started to burn oil at the rate of 1/2 quart every 800 miles. What I needed to know was how do I confirm what the service guy said that honda says 2 qts per 1000 is allowable. Does anyone have any idea where I can find that information for my self?

If I remember correctly, I think Honda says 1 qt every 1,000 mile is allowable. Even at that, I still think that's a bit excessive.

If you change oil every 5,000 miles... that about 8.5 qts you'll need to put in before next oil change.

Oil consumption seems to be a pretty common issue with the 8th generation Accord.

You say your the original owner with less than 30k and have started to burn a half quart every 800 miles? Did you burn oil always when the car was new and the problem is getting gradually worse or did you just notice the oil consumption? I had a similar problem in my first 10 thousand kilometres that stopped after my first oil change. There is an oil additive in new cars so just wondering if you remember when you did your first oil change or how hard you drove it from day one?

I didn't notice it until this last spring I was getting an error code which apparently for the ECO not working properly. They knew that this was because of low oil. now that I have been aware I check it every 1000 miles which led me to put 3/4 quart Saturday. I was planning to go back and ask a different advisor about what is the acceptable limit?

Thanks for the links to the potential lawsuit they were very informative.

If I were having the problem I'd just do the ye-olde small claims court. Sue for $5k for an engine rebuild...Honda would probably settle just to avoid the publicity of it. No judge would take "1 qt / 1000 mi = normal" argument seriously.

Didn't you check your oil at all from new? If not you could have been driving on low oil and done some damage.

I'm very curious what oil you have been using in the car? I've seen way too many people using Mobil 1 or some other synthetic from day 1, and then after a while, the engine would start using oil? What oil and weight have you been using? How often do you change your oil?

NOTE: I'm not blaming or pointing fault at you, I'm just compiling information.

Since the old days; I always check the oil level on all my cars - new, old, classic......always checking the oil on all my cars......did I mention ths that I always check.....

Once you have completed you're lawsuit,

May i suggest lucas oil additive to help alleviate that oil consumption, although used on older hondas it will stop that slow burn off of oil.

Only a suggestion.

^^ How did they do the ECU update? Via the OBDII port?

if ur car is still warrantied take it in now,if they tell u its normal trust me its NOT.there have been several cases of this, this is the first case iv heard with of a v6 having oil consumption problems.i for one got a brand new short block from oil consumption almost a year ago. my car was drinking 1/2 qt every 1k miles, i have not had to add one drop since my new engine. i also had the ecu update b4 the new engine, it didnt work

Ask Honda maybe if the warranty work to fix oil consumption on the 4cylinder can be done on the V6?

I didnt like that my 4cylinder was consuming oil. Synthetic oil didn't help but I do use it. 5W20 :)

What apparently fixed the issue was the warranty work done by a great dealership. They replaced the pistons and piston rings. At least that's what the paper says. They had my car for 2days though to do the work.

My car was out of warranty...but because this phenomenon was so common...they extended the engine warranty.

5000miles and counting since oil change...and haven't had to add any additional drop of oil.

My wife has a 2010 Crosstour that had a fowled spark plug after 20k miles along with excessive oil consumption. The problem continued in the same cylinder and had the plug replaced again. The third time at 56k miles Honda finally agreed there was an issue and ended up replacing the entire short block. I talked to the mechanic and he said it's been a problem with the new 6 cylinders. But her's was probably the worst he's seen. Luckily we still had a 4k miles until the powertrain warranty expired.

2008 i4 new pistions and rings...

Just to keep this old thread going, ours is in getting new pistons and rings at 65000. Honda is covering 80%.

From reading there are two different problems.
The V6 has computer issues and in many cases a programming update can help solve the problem, but if it isn't corrected before the first really low condition damage is done caused consumption that the ecu fix can't correct.

On the i4 there doesn't seem to be root cause, just that quite a few end up starting to burn oil after about 40000. Once it starts it gets drastically worse once you run it low one time, which is easy to do since the oil life monitor that an owner is suppose to follow for oil changes has NOTHING to do with how much oil is actually in the system. In addition you will starting here engine noise and have damage already done long before the low oil light ever comes on.

Open a claim with Honda of america. Mine started to burn around 4,000 miles. I had the Honda service document this and opened a claim. They reprogrammed the computer used a bore scope and changed some plugs. I had to have them do a few concumption tests. Now at 67,000 my #3 cylinder was misfiring. I got the OK from Honda for a new short block and loaner car fully covered. I have a 2010 v6 coupe.

Did you ask if they would let you keep the old block? I imagine they'll probably want to keep it to get scrap value, but it would still be cool to have.
