I want to change the atf today and was wondering if Castrol ATF Z1 will be ok. The bottles say it's made for Hondas and Toyotas. I'm guessing it should be fine?
Can I use Castrol ATF-Z1 instead of Honda Genuine fluid?

There are mixed opinions I and Honda feel that only Honda DW-1 should be used. Some feel that you can use any fluid, I have heard some people that love Redline D4 and some that even mix different fluid. My .02 cents is stick with Honda ATF DW-1. This topic has been discussed many times over and no one answers rises to the top.

You could've searched through this forum before posting this question... It has been asked a thousand times over, and the general majority will strongly recommend using ONLY Honda DW-1. It's not hard to acquire, not expensive, and is the only fluid that Honda recommends for use. Why in the world would you use anything else?? :dunno:
Your transmission is too important to use anything but the best. I would highly recommend against using anything other than DW-1. Also, once you pick a fluid you should stick with it. Don't mix that stuff.

I assume the "Z1" moniker, is a reference to Honda's old formulation, which would put them a bit behind the times. DW-1 is the latest Honda ATF and has been for years.

There really needs to be a sticky on this topic. It comes up all the time (lately) and the answers haven't changed.
Valvoline, Redline, Catrol, Mobil, Wesson....it's all universal oil that does NOT meet the specs of the Honda fluid (compare their MSDS' if you don't believe me) and Honda tells their techs NOT to use anything but Honda atf fluid in their ATs. It's not a recommendation or suggestion to use their fluid, it's a must according to Honda. This isn't like engine oil that gets completely dumped every 3000-5000 miles (on average).

Use whatever you want but just know that nearly everyone here says DW-1 ONLY. I'm sure the $2 per quart you save over Honda fluid will make you sleep better at night.

And that's what I found too....lots of pages with all kinds of subject and opinions.
Anyhow, I rode my bike to the Honda dealer, as it's a little far away from me and wanted to save on gas, and got 4 Qts of DW-1. I was able to get 3.4 qts of fluid out by jacking up one side when draining stopped. The oil was pretty dark and the plug thickened with black stuff.
I was about to put in Castrol ATF-Z1 last week, good think I didn't.

If it was that dark and the plug was gunked up, I would do two more drain and fills.

You don't need to buy a new washer for each of the D&Fs obviously (for a grand savings of like $1 haha). But it is well worth it to do the multiple drain and fills my man, trust me. As previously stated by Drew, make sure to drive it around for a little between each D&F to circulate the fluid through the system. Make sure to shift through every gear, including D3 and R. The transmission is no joke, and it feels good to be confident with it. Think how many times it shifts up and down when you drive.

Okay, go here, enter part # 08200-9008A and select "Acura" next to it. You will get Acura DW-1 for $6.17 a quart, with free shipping from Curry Acura. It's the same exact thing as Honda DW-1. Don't buy another crush washer.

Hopefully you didn't find it hard to do. Most of us think it's easier than changing the oil because we do it on the ground without having to jack the vehicle to get at the drain plug. :thumbsup:
