Morning. Did a search and didn't quite see a recent response to a CPO question ... so here goes.

I'm interested in a used Accord Sport SE. I've found one offered at a Honda dealer that would require a decent drive to visit, but nothing too major. The vehicle is not a CPO. I am aware of various reasons this could be - the dealer doesn't want to invest the $ to certify, or there's something wrong with the vehicle itself. Curious any thoughts from this group ... if the lack of a CPO tag is a true warning flag. I'm on the fence of driving a decent distance to check if it isn't worth the trip.

I'm also a bit concerned about the head gasket issue that would seem to inflict this generation of Accords and the 1.5, but I'm curious if those issues are truly widespread, or a result of poor maintenance ... or perhaps something else.

Posting in the General Discussion area as the CPO piece would fit here (and not Generation-specific). Appreciate your thoughts!

I think the head gasket issues are a design flaw. They seem pretty widespread and fairly random. Given that, I'd splurge on the CPO. That extended warranty that comes with them provides peace of mind.

Edit: most vehicles are not CPO. I wouldn't worry too much about why. CPO is simply a nice bonus!

With regard to the 1.5t, I’m on the side that it’s probably not as bad as it sounds since most people with issues tend to whine on the forums. Most people that have no issues most likely never post anything online.

With that said, there does seem to have notably more issues with the 1.5t vs the 2.0t. The fact that they don’t certify it isn’t necessarily a red flag, but I’d play it safe and go with one that is CPO. Another option is to get one without CPO and buy the Honda Care yourself. It is typically cheaper that way vs getting one with CPO anyways.

Non CPO the vehicle is being sold "as is" unless your state has a law where the dealer gives you a certain amount of warranty when buying a used car from them. If you still decide to go that route, finding a trusted mechanic in that area to do an inspection before the purchase would be another challenge. CPO would give you some warranty & peace of mind.
