A very odd thing happened to me and my wife today. I live in a very remote part of my state... The closest neighbor I have is over 9 1/2 miles away!

Anyways... I was driving on a back road in my wife's 96 Skyline R33, my wife behind me in her 'New' Subaru Impreza WRX STI. (We were coming home upon purchasing the Subaru at a Dealer in a city about 75 miles away). All was good, nothing unusual. We came to the intersection of my town that has a stop sign. (Yes, its so remote, theres only one stop sign in the entire town.)
I come to a stop, my wife Jayne behind me, aggresively revving her engine. So of course I took her up on her little bet, and peeled out from the intersection, my wife in tail.
I got up to 103mph, and my wife was still behind me, doing about the same speed. And then, it happened. I could see blue lights flashing behind my wife's car. We came to a slow, and parked along side the completely deserted road, the cop parks with his rear bumper touching mine. (I suppose to keep us from leaving). He instructed my wife to pull her car , with her front bumper touching the Skyline's rear. The cop asked us both for ID, BUT NO REGISTRATION..... odd. He went back to his car, and came back a min. later. He told us that he could either, A) take a bribe of $150, or B) arrest us both and have our driving privaleges revoked..........

Ok, pause the story here.....
For one thing, real cops never, ever park infront of the car that they have just pulled.... Two, they would never pull two people, and only box one of them in, without calling for back up...... Three, we were doing 100mph +... no cop would let that go.....

The guy claimed to be an undercover, as he had no uniform, no cop car. He did have a badge of somesort, and a gun that I assume was real. We of course paid him the money, and he quickly counted it, and was out of sight before my wife and I had time to realize what happened. His car did have blue and white strobes, so I dont know what he really was.

Im guessing we got robbed. Has anybody ever heard of this type of thing before? What should I do? Does this happen a lot, or am i just unlucky?

Wow

Im kind of worried, because if he was a cop, and I tell them why I get pulled, Im worried that they will fine me/revoke my driving seeing as nothing real was done about it. Do you think that if he was a cop, and they find out that i was pulled for doing 100 +, that they will come after me to impose proper fines, etc?

What kind of car was he driving? Color? State license plate or civilian license plate? Any police car markings other than the strobes? I think you just got robbed.

Call your police dept anyway. If it was a legit cop, then he should be off the streets for offering to take a bribe. Don't even mention that you were doing 100+. If that guy wasn't a legit cop, then the police would hopefully catch that guy and put him behind bars.

yep you got robbed..... even the cops in unmarked cruisers will have the gov't plates on the vehicle.....

call the cops.....

I really doubt they would cite you based on your own testimony that you were speeding/racing. I would just leave a few 'minor' details out of the report and it would go something like this: "Yeah me and my wife were on our way home, minding our own business. We each pulled away from the stop sign and accelerated, and may have been going a little fast. A car with a blue strobe then pulled up behind us and proceeded to detain us in a very abnormal manner. He offered to ignore the infraction in exchage for $150, which we accepted."

He's either a crooked cop or not a cop at all, and it needs to be reported asap. Just think hard and give the best description as you can.

You should have made better friends with him. Cops DO pull people over two at a time (all the time around here). If you report him, just imagine the hell he could raise with you guys. 37 in a 35? Sure you could fight it in court...but every month? Is your Skyline even street legal? How about your JDM F22? You know they can cite you for a TON of things. My friend got a $1000 illegal emissions ticket on his EVO, and he wasn't even speeding :dunno: (No cat)

really? The Skyline is street legal. I know for a fact. I dont anything about the JDM F22, really. The previous owner dropped it in a month before i bought it. And he only sold it because he was going to do 15 in 'Club Fed.'

so... i dont know. I do have the same feeling that the cop could raise hell for me.
I dont know what to do yet

If the guy was a real cop, do you think that you are the only one he tried pulling this scam on? These kinds of accusations are to be taken "anonymously" and your identity should not be revealed to the cop unless he is being prosecuted. In any case, the right thing to do is to report this incident.

Stiller -- Local PD out here have undercover silverados, nissan maximas and buick centurys.. not all of them have "CA EXEMPT" plates, some of them are normal w/ month & year stickers..

But as far as the cop robber thing.. the incident is already over; the cop [if he was one] used his own judgement and did not give you a ticket, there is nothing they can do about it now, I would call in and ask about it.. maybe anonymously, but the whole thing sounds fishy. In CA there are a few ways to tell if it's a real cop or not, by state law all police vehicles must have a solid red light displayed on the front of the vehicle..

It's not like he can come back a day later and change his mind..

i still would report it to authorities, and let it be a lesson learned not to speed so much.....

i am as guilty as the you are tho..... hitting the governor on my car over the wknd.... :D

I would be at the cop shop reporting it. No matter what,,, you just got robbed. If this is a real cop running around doing this he needs to be taken off the job and jailed. If its a imposter he needs to be in jail. Whats the problem.... Report this for gods sake!!!!

kind of ironic...... :paranoid: :dunno:

from the horse's mouth...

well, from someone who's pulled enough people over back in the day and written out a bunch of tickets, though never out of uniform...

in the day and age of cell phones, it is STUPID to be caught in this situation. no offense. every police officer (local, statie, etc.) has a name tag and a badge number. if either is not visible, you have the right to ask for this info, and a -real- cop is REQUIRED to give it to you. spell it to you if he has to.

you're also allowed to say, "pardon my distrust, but i would like to call your precinct/division/whatever and verify your existence". you're allowed to pull out your cell phone and do so on the spot. you don't call the number he gives you. you call 411 to get the location of his 'base' and then check.

this is your right. granted, you shouldn't have a hissy attitude and a chip on your shoulder while you're doing it, but such is the truth.

btw, the same applies for cops in uniform as well. they have to tell you who they are. be polite, don't make sudden moves (i ain't kidding), don't do anything stupid. if you have to reach into your bag/pocket/glove compartment for your cell, tell the potential police officer you're about to do so.

had it turned out that he was real, you wouldn't have to explain why you were checking. you could've hung up, paid the bribe, and gone home knowing you weren't taken for a ride. hopefully you weren't, but hey, we'll never know.

(btw, state troopers -love- pulling over multiple cars at the same time, -especially- if there's a suspicion that the cars are not random, i.e., one is specifically following the other one).

hope other people can use this info.

:)

 I got pulled over for stopping right smack dead in the middle of an intersection at a red light (long story but somebody cut me off on an attempt to run a yellow and I couldn't stop in time like I wanted to). I just pulled over as soon as I saw the lights come on, turned off the music, put the key on top of the gauge cluster, hands on my lap. He didn't even ask for registration and just said slow down, have a nice day.

There's a video where they pulled over an entire VW club at once for using construction zone/cones as an autocross track

and i totally understand why he did that.
i've done exactly what you did when pulled over in the city.
if you're pulled over on the highway (esp. if you were speeding like a maniac), you want to pull over, shut the car off, make sure your seat belt is on, roll the window down, take your car keys in your left hand and stick it out the window, keeping your right hand atop the steering wheel.

this won't necessarily get you out of a ticket, but you won't be punished as serverly as you could be.

UPDATE!!

The local police said that they have had numerous reports of unmarked cars pulling people over and taking money....

They said that there is nothing they can do about it because they dont have enough info to go after anyone.. Apparently its the same guy, switching cars... or just different people. They said "sorry for your loss"

ouch..... at least that nothing worse happened.....

money, and material things can be replaced; lives can't.....
