just noticed yesterday that my speed in speedometer is not the same with the speed indicated in the GPS(portable). at 172kph in speedometer, only 160kph in GPS. there is a slight difference at lower speeds and the gap goes bigger at higher speeds. three questions:
1. which is more accurate, the GPS or the speedometer?
2. my tire size is 215/60/R16.....could this be the culprit?
3. if the latter is true, what is the recommended tire size?

probably the speedometer. gps tends to lag since it has to coordinate with satellites and etc.

actually GPS speed is very very accurate. it is most likely more accurate than your speedometer. True it might lag a bit depending on ur GPS receiver/software but overall it is more accurate than your speedo for the exact reason you stated. if you changed ur tires/wheels and to a difference size ur speedo will be off.

i was ganna ask if his tires changed sizes or something.

i didnt know the gps speed was so accurate.

isnt that the stock tire size anyway for the base model? IF you have 17s stock your speedo will be off by 3km/h at that speed. Combine that with the fact factory speedo is calibrated higher than actual speed. For instance, when my speedo says 70km/h (44mph) im actually going 65. (41mph). To see non calibrated speed, start with radio off, then while pressing down buttons 1 and 6 together , turn on the radio. Then push 5 and you will get digital speedo.

yup the speed will display on your radio display in diag mode above..
again the speed is not as accurate as GPS speed which uses the doplar effect and is usually within +-1mph.. but it does lag so if your speed is changing a lot it wont be accurate for that instant in time.. this is seen when you slow to a stop and ur GPS speed shows like 1-3mph and finally hits zero after a second or two delay...

You were driving over 100 MPH?
Worse yet, driving illeagally fast on public roads while looking at GPS speed rather than paying attention to driving??? :paranoid: :dunno:

EDIT: It appears OP is in United Arab Emirtes which had appareantly raised the speed limit of certain highways to 160 KPH, or 100 MPH, http://www.ameinfo.com/60564.html , I have to wonder how much traffic carnage are there? Things go badly in a big hurry at that kind of speeds.

BUT, regardless if 100 MPH is legal in that country, it is still not too smart to be looking at the GPS display and compare to the dash display while driving at triple digit speed...........

correct. i live in the outskirts of abu dhabi. 240 kms of straight road from city, road is fenced on both sides(even cats can't obsrtuct), 2 lanes in one direction with a lane for buses/trucks ONLY. is there any reason to go slow or should i swap my accord to a city and go 100kph?:lmao:

how can you call that a "safety nazi"??? :dunno:

if you were going a 100mph+ and you popped a tire or a rather large pebble flew at your windshield...you are gonna lose control...

yea going at 100mph might seem a bit scary but I guess most cars are designed to sustain those speeds and still be safe. .

I think there was actually a study done awhile back that doesnt necessarily correlate high speeds with higher accidents/deaths.

Dont forget the autobahn in Germany.. . no speed limit! and I dont think its any more dangerous than our roads and highways here..

My 6MT with 18s is just 1 mph off at 60 mph (61 vs 60), for a speedo error of 1.7%. My CRV is just 1 mph off at 80 for a 1.25% error. My BMW is 5% off. Hondas have the most accurate speedos in my experience. By the way, all 3 cars have EXACTLY the same accuracy on the odometer, which is good. I've made a trip to my daughter's college on all 3 cars, traveling identical roads and stopping at the same gas station, and exactly 401 miles on all 3, which is exactly what Google maps show. Good day.

Diagnostic mode
Hold "1" and "6" then power the radio.
Press "5"

Difference between Speedometer and GPS could be explained by lag time between signal sent to satellite and then received back by SAT NAV unit, with speed change in between sending and receiving, speedometer changes real time, thus ‘real time’ verses ‘lag time’, Regards

LYAO all you want, I guess you are still upset your "How to delete Electronic Speed Limiter" thread got locked me.

I have less issues when someone is doing the legal speed limit of 100 MPH, whether it's at UAE or on the autobahn in Germany, I have driven on the autobahn, legally at triple-digit speeds.

You've probably seen the drifting craze with front-wheel drive Accords over there, some of these drivers allowing to legally drive at 100 MPH is simply asking for trouble and accident waiting to happen. In comparison, the drivers in Germany are so well disciplined I had little concern when I did drive at over 100 MPH over there.

What I DO have issues with, and it's just like people using hand-held cell phones while driving, is that OP was more interested with the discrepancy of speed indicated between his instrument cluster vs. the GPS unit while at 100 MPH, rather than paying attention to the task at hand, which is, uh, DRIVING.

i got to drive on the autobahn at the ripe old age of 16 years old and 7 months....just 4 months after i got my license in the states :D

Please just spare us all your sanctimonious crap about how we should run our lives and drive our cars. I'm not sure if "safety nazi" is the best title for such allegedly well meaning jerks who feel compelled to stick their noses in others' business. This is PC run amok. The pansies now feel empowered to behave like the petty little buttinskies they are. Take your "issues" and stick em. Why don't you just go away and run your own life, you trivial piece of protoplasm.
