In the last 2 weeks I have had 4 accounts with coming out to a dead battery for no apparent reason. 3 were within 2 hour frame and one was within 30 minutes. My headlights/fog lights were switched to the off position, radio, heat/ac were off, and all interior lights were off as well.

The most recent experience was last night. I took a girl out for a romantic night out... only to come out to a dead car battery less than an hour and a half later. Needless to say, I didn't get "lucky". :thumbsdow

Now I am at the dealership and I wanted some help on what to say if they try and tell me this was my own doing for having HID's in my headlights or fog lights. Everything is grounded and wired correctly, I double checked before I came to the dealership. Please help!

Thanks!

Might have to do with charging system. Or you simply just might need a new battery.:dunno: Just wait to see what the dealership has to say. HID shouldn't kill a battery if everything is wired up correctly.

Sounds like the alternator is bad.

what should I say if they try and tell me this isn't under warranty?

If it is the alternator I would hope that would be covered under the basic bumper to bumper warranty. If they say it isn't then ask them to see the warranty info in writing. Then again it might be something else...

The important thing is that you get it fixed pronto so that you can can get lucky :naughty:

They're definitely going to blame the HIDs.

I'd say take them off to be safe and attempt to remove most traces. They will give you hell, I'm almost sure of it, which is why I'm scared to do anything electrical.

I don't think battery is covered. If not, just have them put in a new battery. If the problem persists, then you/they know it's not the battery. They should fix everything else after that under warranty.

Well, funny that you say that milenium... The service manager just came up to me and said that the battery tested okay.. but they went ahead and put a new one in anyways. Like you said if it happens again, we know that it isn't that battery.

Thanks for the help... If it does happen again I will be sure to let everyone know. Maybe a different problem with the 8th gen?

So did they charge you or was it free?

Easy to test with a multi-meter if you got one, and are somewhat savvy.

Test the battery terminals with the car not running. Should read close to 12 volts.
Start the car, test again.....should read close to 14 volts if the alternator is working.
If both check out, check for parasitic draw.

Let car sit off for 20 minutes.
Set mutli-meter to 10 amps DC
Unhook positive battery terminal, put one lead from the multimeter on the battery, the other on the battery cable, and wait for the car to go back to sleep (about a minute or so). You should read about 35 milliamps of draw or less once it goes back to sleep. If you have more than that, you have parasitic draw.

Have someone unplug any accessories in the car (chargers, etc), then start yanking fuses one by one until you find what's drawing current.

Just something for you to do if you want to give it a go yourself. I know my car is under warranty, but it's a hassle to take it to a dealer, so I like to troubleshoot the easy stuff myself.

If it is going dead while sitting I would have to say that it is either a drain, as what was stated before, or a bad battery. If the alternator was the culprit then most likely once jumped off it would only run for a little while until battery was drained again and would die where ever you were at at that moment. Hopefully it is just that battery and you will be good to go again. How many miles?

Check your lemon law policy if you are still within the first year (this is assuming its not the battery and instead something else). Basically, if you bring the car in 4 times (different each state) for the same problem they have to give you a new car... its tough to meet the strict "same problem thing" but if they cant fix it after you keep bringing it in it will indeed apply.

PS: Sorry but I didn't look up the lemon law exactly so please don't kill me if I am a little off as I am just going off of memory. My point: bring it in if the problem keeps occurring and consult the lemon law rules in your state to make sure you take advantage.

My car is 1 year 3 months 6 days old and has 22350 miles on it so I'm out of the lemon law limits.

The battery is fully covered for 36 months full-replacement in the U.S., we only get two years free replacement in Canada and the 3rd year is pro-rated.

Good info. Thanks.
