As some of you know i had a tablet mounted in front of the radio for quite a while. I had been looking for how to make a nice in-dash install but wasnt finding anything. I didnt want to get rid of my OEM unit and doing something custom would be expensive and time consuming. But i finally found a way to do it that im very happy with. I want to give thanks cem_ari for pointing me in the right direction.

This is the Before:

This is the panel that let the magic happen:

It replaces your original center upper panel with the AC vents. You will need to take of your oem vents and place them onto your new panel.

You will need small screws and washers to do this. I got these at Home Depot

You will also need to modify the panel because the hazard button opening is to small for the US Accords that have the "passanger airbag off" light on top of the button. I used a dremel and some files to make the hole bigger.

I was using the aluminum tape to hold it in place to then make some kind of bracket to hold the button, but it turns out that the aluminum tape did a great job at securing it so i just left it like that.

Then in order to turn off the tablet or turn it on if it ever shuts down because it runs out of battery, i needed access to the power button so that i didn't have to take everything apart. What i did was drill a a small hole on top the panel right above where the power button would be. I then used some plastic thingy (i dont even know what it is) that i found around the house with a small rubber washer inside to avoid it from coming out. Now when i push it down it pushes down the power button. And you cant see it when you are sitting in the car.

I then took the the charger terminal apart to make it smaller and less bulky so that it fit behind the plastic panel. And used the mounting holes from the panel with some metal strips to hold the tablet in place and secure.

Then i transferred all the clips from the OEM panel to this one and snapped it into place.

Now the part that everyone was asking about.

Where did i get it?

This is the unit from where it came from:

You need to contact the seller and tell them that you are only interested in the upper plastic panel, with no screen or anything. He sold it to me for $30 dollars, then the shipping to Miami was $30 more, and since they dont accept paypal Western Union charged me a fee of $12 bucks for a grand total of $72.

The review

The plastic has a slighly different texture than the rest of the dash, It also has a some tiny sparkling things. But overall not a deal breaker. You have to look very close to notice the difference.
The fitment is decently good, i cant say with much certainty yet because i am missing some of clips so that can influence the fitment. I think once i get the clips in it will fit close to perfect.
The quality of the plastic is better than i expected, not as good as the oem panel but still pretty good.

OMFG ... when I saw that other chap's thread about putting the computer in his accord I knew somebody was bound to do just this - because as soon as I saw this above piece I immediately thought of doing this exact same thing ... To be honest, I was more interested in how you dealt with a timed out screen and charging.

This is just all sorts of win brother. Even if I'm a little disappointed that you didn't wrap it and the radio face to match the steering wheel controls.

Looks cool. Is that a Samsung Tab 2 7"? I'm probably going to get the next Nexus tablet for the better screen resolution and quickness. I might have to order this mount. What a hassle with the western union though.

I think you can order a bluetooth mouse or trackpad if you didn't want to reach up there for the touchscreen controls. There looks to be plenty of space for a fan back there also to cool the tablet.

I have my radar unit mounted the passenger visor and took the power from the upper map lights.

Yes its is. And a Nexus would be a really good choice.

There is plenty of space for a fan, the back of the panel even has a venting circle with monuting points inside for the fan.

The charger is tapped into the cigarette lighter so the tablet gets power when the ignition is on. I use an app called Tasker (best app ever) to automate and control what the tablet does.
So when the tablet is getting power the screen timeout is set to 23 hours 59 minutes and 59 seconds and when it doesnt get any power the screen timeout is 7 seconds.

Hahaha im not done brother, the faceplate WILL be wrapped lol

This is awesome, it looks so good! Would direct sun exposure affect the tablet? I know my ipod touch's LCD backlight died in 2010 after spending a day on my dash.

Nice mod Marcelo, very nice indeed. The 7th gens still seem fresh inside, a mod like that makes it seem just like a brand new car. Love it.

My hat is off to you, sir. I am wondering the same thing as NightFire though. I might have to do this!

Thank you guys. I am loving it so far, I've seen other tablet installs in other cars and they all required relocating the radio or getting amps, with this you don't need to do any of that.

I've had my tablet in the car for a year and change now (in the previous position) and I have never had a problem. Mind you, I live in Florida and my car is dark so temperatures inside get up to 100+ the only thing is that when it gets hot the tablet has a safety features where it won't start charging until it cools down. It says something along the lines of "charging has been paused due to high temperatures".

But since the tablet is right above the AC ducts I'm thinking about maybe taking a little detour conduit out of the ducts and pointing it at the back of the tablet to help cool it. Idk yet though since that would mean cutting into the AC ducts.

I probably wouldn't do that with the ac vent.. in the winter you would be pumping heat in there instead of cool air.. better off mounting a fan back there

I had a vent mount for my iPhone.. was blasting the heat in the winter and after 20-30 mins my phone shutdown because it got too hot

I tried contacting a couple of ebay sellers and they didn't want no part in it lol Hopefully these guys come through...
I tried the same thing, they won't sell you just the top panel.

There is an an option on the site that let's you chat with them which is how I did it. You might have to catch them during their business hours which in the east coast is like 2 am. I did most of the talking with them during my late night study sessions for finals.

In my opinion it doesn't look as good, and you would need much more modification for a tablet install.

I admire your persistence and determination. That really looks good.
Thank you sir, I appreciate that a lot.

I got you brotha lol I have contacted them , a couple of ebay sellers and the OP's contact also. I figured if I go through all this trouble and score some success, it'll eliminate this process for a couple of other members on here
Well played Death !!

^ I like your attitude! You are going to go far kid!!!

I wonder if it easy to remove the tablet for maintenance or storage?

Id hate having to put a tablet in there, and then have it be very difficult to add songs or whatever when I need to haha.

hmmm ... that would be something to look into ... but you know, I've never used mine that way - strictly Torque and Maps for me.

You could probably make your own cradle and have it able to pivot out. A cradle could be formed by a moldable material. You put this Instamorph material in hot water and you can now shape it. It will settle and harden.

To secure the tablet in the cradle, you can then use magnets or velcro.
