I have an 2001 Accord 4 door, 4 cyl with an intermittent transmission problem.
The problem started last year at around 210,000 km. I was pulling out of a parking lot one day and the and the rpm's shot up, but the car didn't accelerate. I shifted through all gears, but I couldn't get the car to move. I had it towed home and starting calling around transmissions shops.
The following day, I went out, started up the car and everything was fine.

That weekend I bought some Honda ATF and changed the fluid. A few months went by without any problem at all.

At the 235,000 km mark, I started noticing the car would start slipping when it was cold. As soon as the car was warmed up to operating temperatures everything was fine.

At 250,000 km I changed the fluid again, but I still had the same issue when it was cold.

Its now at 280,000 km and the car started slipping when taking off. It would rev up a bit before going into gear. Also, when I out the car in reverse it would make a nasty ping/clunk sound.
Then this morning I got in the car and its fine. Its as if nothing had happened at all!

Its pretty clear that there is an issue, but does anyone know if this is something that can be fixed without replacing the whole transmission?

Thanks

With that mileage your either looking at a rebuild or something from a salvage yard. If the car is in good order I'd look onto a rebuild. It's more money but you'll have a warranty once it's done.
Besides the transmission its in great shape. Engine runs great and the suspension is tight.
No rust, dents or dings. It shines inside and out.
I bought it 2 years ago with 160 000 km in it.

Your car only has about 173,000 miles, I can't think in metric, and based on your description of the rest of the car I would get the transmission rebuilt. Unfortunately, these generation Accords had notoriously bad automatic transmissions. My son is driving my 2000 Accord V6 and Honda replaced the transmission under an extended warranty at 93,000 miles. I think part of the rebuild is to add a transmission fluid cooler near the radiator. The car runs great. Find a reputable repair shop that has experience rebuilding Honda transmissions and keep on driving the car. I would have the shop install a transmission fluid cooler. I'm hoping the 2000 Accord makes it to 250,000 miles or about 400,000 km.
