I’m wondering if I am understanding the lock out function in my 2023 hybrid. It is turned on. I thought car would not lock if key fob was inside. Well, it did. I went somewhere for an hour or so and when ready to leave, I realized I didn’t have my key fob. The car was locked, and I know I did not lock it. i couldn’t open door with app either.

I eventually got home and tried to recreate this, but i could not get car to lock again with fob inside. Not that I wanted it to, but I’m trying to understand what happened.

Any ideas on how my car locked itself with key fob inside with the lock out function on?

Sounds like the car wasn't locked when you left and eventually auto-locked itself, or, if you had already started/driven the car it allowed you to lock the fob inside after parking.

My understanding across generations for how and when the car locks/unlocks are:

  • Fob can unlock or lock car from outside
  • Fob cannot lock car from inside
  • Fob unlocks door from outside, car will re-lock if no door opens
  • Fob unlocks door from outside and door is opened, car remains unlocked
  • Exterior door lock button cannot lock car with fob inside
  • Interior door lock switch can lock car with fob inside
  • Trunk will not latch with key fob in trunk

The 11th gen can very well have another evolution of security but if you pulled up and parked and left without locking the car I would expect it to be unlocked upon your return. Have you tried calling the dealer or looking through the car's internal menu to see what options you have for the lock controls?

There's an app that'd allow you to unlock the car if you left the keys inside??? Please do tell, hadn't heard of this...I can be hopelessly absent minded and have locked myself out of my own car many times over the years... 😂

At times, other electronic signals can mess with the car's ability to sense the key fob inside. Also, if the key fob's battery is weak, the car may not be able to detect it.

I didnt see any settings that would have allowed this. In your bullet list, the 6th item isn’t true of my accord. I tried locking the door with interior switch and fob inside, as soon as I closed door it unlocked. Hopefully, it was a ne time fluke

To lock in that instance the door would have had to been closed first then locked, with or without the ignition on. I haven't tried on my 9th gen but in my 6th gen if you have keys in ignition with the door open then depressed the lock it would immediately unlock itself.

Forgot my keys inside my 24 EX-L today, was wondering why I didn't hear the usual walk-away auto-lock beep until I got to the front door of my condo building and realized that I had no way to get in.

So yes, I can attest that the Lock Out function does indeed work very well. 😂

As long as the 12V battery is good, you could do the old coat hanger trick and aim for the power door lock unlock button. On some cars, you can gently pry the glass or door frame for clearance. I've seen small inflatable bladders meant for that purpose. Really depends on the car though.

Either take the physical key from the spare fob, or have another key cut and put it inside a magnetic "hide-a-key" box, which you hide somewhere on outside of the car.

I hide mine under front end of the car. It's in a small metal crevice which helps the magnet hold it in place, so it shouldn't fall off if I hit a big bump, but it's still easy enough to find/reach if (ok, when) I need it...
