Driving halfway back from a trip, get “Collision Mitigation Braking System Problem- Consult Dealer.” ACC is rendered non-operational. Got home, cleaned the “Honda Sensing” radar detector in the front bumper with some detergent and paper towels, everything’s fine. No dealer involved.

This one is interesting. I haven’t seen this problem before.

What was the weather like on your way back from the trip? Has the car ever been in an accident?

Nice June 21st, no rain, temps in the mid- 80s. Drove all the way up IL 1 from I-64 to IL 133 at Paris, then West to I-57 North and home. Lost the ACC @2/3 of the way, near Marshall IL. Below find sensor ‘before’ & ‘after’ pix. Car has never been in a wreck. 2018 Accord 2.0T Touring, bought July ‘18, @31K miles. Probably more than you wanted to know.

Its funny you mention this, I had the exact same problem this last weekend. I cleaned the sensor and it still went off again an hour or so driving. But I am lowered on an inch on springs so I think the bumps in the road which there was a lot of, throw it off enough that it gets out of the range it has to sense. I was wondering if other people have had similar issues with lowering springs? I think the end solution will be I have to get it recalibrated for the springs.

Oh I see. I think I misread the last part. Yeah, it makes sense if the issue is now resolved after you clean the sensor. I only asked about the weather since the only times I get non-working message are during steady snow and / or heavy rain, where the safety features sometimes stops working intermittently or completely and only stops either when the accumulation near the sensor is cleaned off or when the rain stops completely.

^Yep^ I used to get a dash warning about the front radar sensor being blocked anytime it snowed on my 2019 and 2021 Accords. I don't think that Honda allowed for much tolerance with the system in the Accord. My wife has never gotten that message with her Passport- which hides the sensor behind the big "H" logo in the grille. I've never experienced it with my Highlander either- which also places the radar sensor behind the emblem in the grille.

I never heard of the error message appearing for bugs though- that's something new to me.

Interesting. It seems like it's one of the drawbacks of the system in 10th gen. Maybe it was that way because the design has been that way since 2018? I wonder if they have fixed that issue with the 11th gen. I guess time will tell.

I had it once in our Odyssey, which also hides it behind the H in the grille. Wet, slushy snow stuck to the emblem, and triggered a warning.

Same problem on my 2019 Accord just two days ago. Driving along on the interstate with the ACC engaged and working fine. Suddenly got the msg about the system not working. At that point I lost both ACC and cruise control, and had the red warning light on the left display.

Drove to my hotel (manual) and shut down. Later that day I tried it and everything claimed to be working. Green all good indicator. HOWEVER, the ACC still does not work. Cruise control works now. And the display shows cars ahead of me. However, although the distance indicator is working, there is no ACC engagement, and the "distance between" bars never show up (anywhere).

It's like that feature is suddenly no longer on the car. However, the ACC and LKAS lights do show up on the display. And LKAS will engage.

Ideas? Things to check?

@James Knox - Could ACC have gotten turned off? Have you tried pressing the Main button once to see if you can exit Cruise and enable ACC again?

Have had occasional similar experience in my '16, but I could re-engage ACC by pressing the Main button (at least that's what the button is called on my Accord) after restarting the car.

To the best of my knowledge, no ... although a good question. I can press the MAIN and get the ACC and LKAS lights on the dash to go on and off. But there seems to be nothing beyond that. If I press main and get the display to show ACC (either in the HUD, or on the display), then accelerate above 25 mph, then foot off accelerator and press set-, car just goes into Cruise Mode. That works, but no ACC. Likewise, no distance bars shown anywhere. Pressing ACC button has no effect. I'll keep trying. Oh, and microwave cover on the front bumper is clean - and, as mentioned, it seems to be working just fine.

With ACC light on, have you tried pressing/holding "distance interval" button for ~1 sec to see if that will activate ACC?

Don't know if there's a fuse specific for ACC, but you may want to check for a blown fuse.

Otherwise, you may have to take it to a dealer or to an inde shop that works on these kinds of systems.

Post back and let us know what happens...

The button with the lines on it, your distance adjustment button, when the cruise is NOT set press and hold that button for a few seconds and it’ll change on the dash from the adaptive cruise to cruise control and the icons should change, to go back to adaptive press and hold button again.

Got it working again. Not entirely sure if "fixed" is a correct term. I finally "pulled the plug" so to speak, and let the car fully reset itself. It looked on the display just like it had before, including the ACC and LKAS lights. But NOW it will go into real ACC mode, not just pretend cruise control. Of course, that leaves the question of why did the microwave flake out to begin with. Yeah, it's hot in Texas, but probably 20 degrees F cooler than it has been before (and will be later this summer).

Tnx, jmk

Glad you got things working again.

I had somewhat similar issue with my '16 at end of 2023 where ACC worked (reluctantly) but LKAS didn't, even though both appeared to be enabled. At least in my case, it wasn't heat-related since it was end of Dec here. Battery and alternator tested ok too.

Didn't do a reset, but after a couple of 50+ mile drives on freeway, things fixed themselves and the problem hasn't recurred. (knock on wood!)
