How far do you drive when it comes on?

I just did 72 miles after the light came on and still only managed to put 15.6 gallons in. Yeah, you've still got 3 gallons left when the light comes on. I'll go for 100 miles the next time it comes on.

i try to push the tank to 300+ miles when the light comes one at like 280. i was driving last week as little beyond 30 miles past the fuel light and notice the car was limiting every throttle modulation i made. it did not feel as fast as it should have and noticed that it was not running as smooth as it usually does.

i guess there is some feature that is limiting me at WOT to save whatever is left in the tank.

I've never felt any hesitation in mine. 300+ miles is all? Mine doesn't come on till 400 or so and I'm going for 500 before I fill up again.

Nevermind, you've got a V6. Still seems a little low, though.

I don't like to let the tank run too low. Don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard or read somewhere that it's not good to run the tank low because it can damage the fuel pump and that the gas at the bottom is dirtier... that the fuel pump can suck up the sludge or sediment that settles at the bottom of the tank and clog the injector or filter.

I usually try to not let it get below 1/4 tank full.

Doesn't it take the fuel from the bottom anyway? :dunno:

i have ran it dry before:thumbsdow luckily i was at the gas station when it ran out:yes: that was a close one:paranoid:but i was kinda short on cash that week:thumbsdow

I have monitored my mileage since i got it and was surprised to see the light come on when i had only used about 13 gallons when the OM states it's a 17 gallon tank.

The problem with the fuel pump is it will start to over heat when there isn't enough fuel to flow through it. It does sound strange that the fuel is used to cool the pump with it being fuel and all, but it is. Every time you allow the fuel pump to over heat or to get hotter than normal, you start to shorten it's lifespan. That's the main reason I try to re-fuel when the tank gets to around 1/4 of a tank left.

Now as far as where the fuel pick-up is located, I don't know. :dunno: But it should be near the lowest part of the tank.

yea i know. thats really crappy gas mileage, but i havent even reached 5k yet or my first OCI, so it should improve after that.
