I just got my 2012 EX L w navi  and it's jerky :thumbsdow.

I was told by friends it was the computer trying to adapt and the VCM whatevers... I just know it shifts rough and I don't like it.

It's a rough up shift and sometimes a rough down shift.
When I let go of the gas at any speed it seems to break or there is a resistance of sorts instead of free coasting.

I really want to hear from other owners. Is this normal, should I just get used to it. I'm used to driving my V8 Durango and hypermiling, so I'm VERY used to coasting and this car coasts VERY oddly...

:dunno: Anyone?

I think it was, I just did not notice it as much. Sadly, I did almost ALL my test driving at a different dealer with a different car. Same as the one I bought, V6 EX L w Navi, but did not notice it ONCE when driving that car. I just took the one I actually bought for a spin around the block before buying it. I think it took me driving it a few days to really have it bother me though. Sometimes it's worse than others.
I called the dealer and they want the Service Manager to go for a ride with me. I just think you notice it more when YOU drive it and can feel it worse.

Again, just wondering if this is kinda normal for this car.

It's normal... Every Accord I've driven shifts like this to a certain degree. I've driven 92, 97, 03, 07 and 11 Accords and every single one of them has driven like this. I'll admit the 7th gen was a bit smoother but not by far. It kind of acts like a car with a manual transmission if you've ever driven one. When cruising at low RPM and you let off the gas the car is kind of jerky that moment you let off the gas then starts decreasing in speed. Next time try driving the car up the RPM it likes to shift at to avoid jerky shifts. Usually around 2900-3000 RPM. I try to shift the car at 2500 so it is slightly jerky when upshifting. Also downgrade assist on the transmission makes downshifting while slowing down a bit jerky too. Like I said it's all normal, just something you have to live with. Honda needs to step up their transmission game. Everyone is moving to 6 and 7 speeds while Honda sticks with the same ol 5 speed since forever.

Thanks for the replies.

Maybe, and just maybe... I'm driving it like I drive my 5.9 V8, to save gas! :dunno:
Keeping the RPMs low, hypermiling, not gunning it etc. etc...
Tomorrow, I'm gonna DRIVE it. Not try to save gas!

I will let ya all know how THAT goes. :salue:

lol, if you don't mind me asking, if you wanted to save gas, why didn't you buy the 4 cylinder exl w/nav?

Honda is the only manufacture that uses a non-planetary gear transmission because they didn't want to pay the patent fee to companies like Borg-Warner (and another company I don't recall). So they invented their own design.

All Honda AT shifts kind of clunky and not "Toyota smooth."

Interesting... is there any evidence of this? What system do they have then??

Test Drive It....

I experienced this exact issue on a test drive with a new 2010 V6 that was just unloaded at the dealer's lot. On the way back to the dealer, I was coasting in D on a downhill and ECO was engaged.

I tapped the gas lightly, and as ECO disengaged, "shifter shock" rocked the entire car in place like we had been hit from behind...

Anyway, it has never happened to this day on my specific 2010 EX-L V6, but I made sure to do a quick check for the issue before I took delivery!

Drive it like you stole it. (joking)
There is some truth to that. I've always noticed Honda AT shifts "smoother" when one is on the gas. Not WOT, but with some pep, than driving it granny style. It like Honda programmed it to what most drivers need to do in real world traffic situation without someone behind you thinking "WhyTF so slow."

Here is an old link talking about the old 4 spd auto. The 5 and 6 spd are still the same. Honda's stubbornness (Honda AT's roots) goes back to the old Hondamatic from the early 1970s.

Sounds like I just have to live with it... UGgghoo.. Oh well.
I will probably get used to it. :dunno:

I like Power, and I wanted the BEST Accord they had, hence the V6...
I tried to save fuel when I drove my 5.9 V8, spending $160 a week on fuel gets OLD. But now that I have two vehicles, I'm gonna drive them both the way they deserve to be driven. :naughty:

I'll give my rational...
Keep in mind the V6 has the VCM. Depending on your type of roads you drive, the VCM V6 will get very good mpg. I have 2 VCM V6 (2011 with Navi) and both get about 32mpg. But the wife and I drive about 90% Highway... where the VCM really shines. If you drive more of a mix, then the In-Line 4 would be much better on mpg.

Also remember some features are only available if you get a V6 (HomeLink). Hence why we got the V6.
