Having the dreaded Crank sensor Code. Looks like the aftermarket starter motor I installed is the culprit. Wish I'd know this before I went to O'Reilly for the starter motor but water under the bridge at this point.

Several Honda Parts online stores are showing multiple starter motors

31200-R41-L01 $228
31200-R40-A01 $400

Can't do the A01RM because there is a $75 core charge and with my current non-OEM starter they won't accept that one back to refund my core charge (the original went back to O'Reilly).

One online place asked for my VIN and recommended R40-A01 because that is the PN associated with my VIN. I talked to the local dealer that did the final diagnosis (bad Starter motor) as well and they're not even showing PN R41-L01 as a valid part number. R40-A01 is associated with my VIN per the dealer (they wanted $555 for a remanuf. unit).

Did find a A01 on Amazon (good seller ratings) claims to be OEM part for $275.

Has anyone been through this? Would love to save $170, but don't want to get it all apart to find I have the wrong part and have to ship it back.

Finally, do I need to have a dealer to the crank re-learn proceedure if I install the new starter? When I put in the Non-OEM unit, it started up an ran fine for a month before I started having the sensor error codes/issues.

Thanks

If this was my car I would do one of 3 of these.

1. Get a used OEM starter and rebuild it myself.
2. Get a used OEM starter and have an auto electric rebuild it.
3. Get a Denso rebuilt starter (OEM is Mitsuba), but Denso has quality parts. Part # 280-6010

You should be able to get a used starter for a reasonable price, rebuilding the starter is covered in an excellent write up on this site.

You could always head to a junkyard and get a starter to rebuild.

Called Majestic Honda and they said the R41-L01 will not work on my vehicle. Another online sellers catalog said it would also not work so that’s out.

Found a OEM motor on Amazon for the same price as the Denso on rock auto without the core return. Selller has 11,000+ reviews with 95% rating and feedback indicates parts he sells are OEM so Im going to try that one.

Didn’t check with Rock Auto on if I can return a nonOEM starter for core return.

Aldo, O’Reilly says they’ll refund my $$ since the part does not work and is causing errors.

Thanks all

BTW, I see a post on how to rebuild the Gen 7 starter motor, but not Gen 8 models? Are they the same?

I sent a message to hondafactoryparts.com asking if the R41-L01 would work in my car. This is their response:

"The correct number for your VIN is 31200-R40-A01 (4 door sedan). 31200-R41-L01 won't work, it's for the 2-door coupe."

It's the same engine. Why would the starter motors be any different?

You did not state if your car is I4 vs V6. If you have the V6, the sedan vs. coupe engines are different. I am not sure about the I4. My suggestion is to buy the Honda OEM starter from Amazon and try to sell the used one on eBay as a core exchange for the buyer. You are already saving money over a dealer/shop install so don't fret too much about the cost. Once you have the new OEM starter installed you will have peace of mind that the best available part is on there.
