I have 2006 honda accord I4 with 85K miles. I need to replace my starter motor. I can't decide on OEM (MITSUBA) motor $400 vs aftermarket motor (Nobrand) $120. I want to save some money and get a aftermarket but i don't know if any good? All starter motor does is start the engine right? no effect on driving?
Thank you

Will you be doing the work yourself?

Personally, I'd rather use the part that's less than 1/3 the price. Most Autozone or NAPA, etc parts will come with a warranty. So if it fails, you may not even be out another $120 to replace it.

The downside would be if you pay someone to do the work, and then pay someone to redo the work, you'll pretty quickly eat up that cost benefit.

That said, I've seen folks on here who say the aftermarket rebuilt starters work fine.

That's right, they just start the engine.

I'd get the aftermarket one.

But... IMO, I would take your existing started to an electric motor rebuild shop and see how much they'd charge. That is if you can go without the car for a little bit.

It seems that your starter dies a bit too early. The new OEM Mitsuba is $275 on line and remanufactured OEM Mitsuba is $207. My only issue with the no name part is the warranty, durability and whether it actually meets the OEM specs. For my money, I would get the reman. Mitsuba and replace it myself. It is actually easy to get to once you remove the battery. Yes, the starter just crank your engine until it started, does nothing when the engine is runnning.

I had a 98 Accord 4cyl AT around 180k that the starter died. Went the autozone reman started because it had lifetime warranty and was quite a bit cheaper than the OEM. Took me 3 starters before I got one that worked. Since I did the work, it was my labor and time to replace it, time that I did not really have much of. My opinion, get the OEM. I think it's worth the extra cost to get it right the first time.

If it's a part that is an easy DIY to change, aftermarket with lifetime warranty is fine. But if it's a pain to replace, think about spending more for the OEM. The "lifetime" could be very short (a bug's life).

just grab one from autozone or oreilly's or somewhere like that. i've used a ton of non oem ones on various cars and friend's cars and never had a problem.

^^ what he said  My OEM Honda one didn't last 70k, quite frankly that's pathetic for an OEM, if I get the same from an Autozone starter i'll actually consider it money well spent lol :) and i'll get a free replacement...win

The starter went out on a 99 Civic I had and I priced around and the cheapest one I could find was well over $100. I took the original oem starter out and took it to the local auto electric repair place and he charged me $30 to rebuild it and even painted it. The thing looked brand new when he was done and worked just as good as the oem one did.
