One of my friends is in a real pinch. He totally went in over his head on a big house and two expensive cars with an ARM mortgage, now it's adjusting and he's pretty screwed.

He has a 2005 super clean Mercedes C230 6-speed manual, in silver. Loaded with everything. has 40,000 miles, and an extended warranty bumper to bumper until 100,000 miles.

He's desperate to unload it, He's willing to take $17,000 cash. The car is sharp, no dings or dents. However, Mercedes reliability is a question mark in my eyes............

Thoughts??

I would be a little weary of mercedes as well. I'm assuming you are thinking about buying it from him? Do you really need a car right now?

I owned a 2000 for a couple of years.......awesome car. I loved it. Since it has the 100,000 bumper to bumper.....you should be in good shape. I would definitely do it.

NEED a car? No. Help a friend out and have a nicer car than I drive now? Maybe. If it was a Lexus or Acura, maybe even a BMW, I would jump on it. However, Mercedes is known for being high maintenance.

I checked around, it seems like he's asking a wholesale price at $17K...............

Hey, as long as you can afford to do it, nothing wrong with upgrading. 17k is definitely pretty cheap, and I'm sure your friend would be happy. At least you know buying from him that there is nothing currently wrong with the car, it's not like he would lie to you.

Try to sell it on Craiglist, Ebay, Autoshopper.com, and cars.com.
Im sure somebody will pick it up.
Good luck!

tyler,

mercedes is calling you, asking you to call them back..... :deal: :D

First question I would have is what does he owe the bank on the car? More or less than he is askng?

Owns more, but the dealers in the area have a ton of these on the lot, and don't really want his, so he's only getting $17K from them. Plus, NONE of them want to buy it outright, they want him to buy another car.........

C class is definately a pretty good mid level car. IF you can afford it and it's as nice as you claim, I'd be tempted to go for it. The warranty pretty much has you covered.

If he owes more than $17K and you buy it how is that a deal? His bank will still own the car for the remaining balance. If you can get it free and clear for that amount along with the warranty, pounce on it.
He's going to make up the difference......... He needs it gone, because like I said, he's got money issues.

I just talked to my insurance agent about the cost of insurance, YIKES!! That may kill the deal.............:thumbsdow

My 2 cents:

You already know the pluses...upgrade on the ride, warranty will protect you on the big ticket variables
Negatives: Expect a good bit more in costs to keep it on the road. If that part is worth it, jump on it, enjoy, and rid yourself of it before the warranty ends.

My business partner has a 2002 jaguar S-type. It has a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. he has 96000 miles on it, and has had $4500 worth of work done under the warranty.........:thumbsdow

The warranty is done on January 15, 2009, and he said he's going to get rid of it by then. His next car is going to be a Caddy or Buick, he said he's looking forward to dropping his labor rate $50 an hour...........:paranoid:

I would not go for it. Believe me...extended service plans mean nothing to you when you still have to deal with the butt pain of taking the car in for repair since you know this will be the case with the MB.

I'd refrain from making this mistake unless you keep the Accord as the spare car. I always hated taking the Acura in for service...just hated it.

I'd be better off with a used M3............:notworthy

This is a Mercedes not an Acura........the dealer should loan you another Mercedes if yours has to stay for an extended period of time. The Mercedes dealership treats you a WHOLE lot different than lesser car dealerships. Believe me.

Even when I took my Benz in for an oil change.......it would come out freshly washed with the tires cleaned and dressed out.

That is true. You will get a completely different level of service from a MB dealership than you would from Acura or Honda.

I'm not sure how bluestars80's comparison to a Jag S type plays into this. Jags have been a piece of crap for decades, and Ford taking them over didn't do much to improve that.
