Hi,
2015 Accord sport manual

I easily have about 30-35 paint chips on my front hood. My car is about 8 months old and I drive the exact same route to work as I did with my 2003 Civic and it had about 5 paint chips after 12 years. Is this normal?

thanks,
Matt

While I cannot personally say yes or no as I don't own a 9th gen...

I do own an 08 civic and it is the same way.

My sisters 15 CRV has been plagued with issues. Sunroof shattering while driving on the freeway, drivers window cracking while at a red light (didn't break though). Windshield got cracked at 5k.

I've heard that the paint they are using is much thinner. But as the paint materials are getting "better" they also not holding up long term... Which I believe to be by design.

My old 01 civic with 250k on it looks about identical to my sisters 2015 CRV with 15k and as equal to her husbands 2010 odyssey with 105k.

The paint is not good on this generation. Very thin and prone to chipping. The best way to fix it is to use Dr Color Chip. I covered up ~40 hood chips with this, worth every penny compared to trying to do so with touch up paint.

soft and thin clearcoat equals lots of chips. And I assume you are talking more of the road rash variety, like pinhead size chips. Plan on about 20 of those every year. Nothing to do with tailgating either. Biggest problem around here is lots of construction and trunks aren't required to cover their load. I've been over 200ft back from a truck full of sand and can hear the grains slapping the windshield.

I've detailed several MB's, Chevys, Fords, etc that are older than my 9th gen and none of them have road rash. Those manufacturers typically have harder clear coats.

I have an 09 CRV whose hood has been obliterated on the leading edge, also had a cracked windshield. I had on 08 Odyssey that also had a cracked windshield but the hood was golden when I traded it in. I put an aeroskin on the Accord, figured something was better than nothing for the leading edge.

I usually stay away from snow plows and trucks on the interstates you can hear all of the crap they put down even with the guards that they have.

Same issue with my gen 8. So bad I have to repaint the whole hood and front bumper. It has 98k miles so I chalk it up to road rash. There is a plastic clear coat mentioned on the forum that gets high marks (oops, sorry for the pun).

I've had my 2015 EXL for 3 weeks, and have already suffered from significant rock chips on my hood on my 12 minute commute to work (all highway) 5 days a week. Im very careful about not tailgating any cars and stay the hell away from any big city trucks that tend to throw things off the back. Although I'm not a fan of the full nose mask, I purchased the OEM mask and used the top portion to help me from getting anymore chips on the hood and cover up the existing ones so I don't get pissed every time I walk pass my car. It fits really well and has "Accord" stamped on it to help with an OEM look.

If you had detailed new Chevys and Fords, you'd see the same problems. The (now required) waterbourne paint isn't as tough. MB likely does better, because they will do more coats. Check out the Chevy truck forums. People are howling about rock chips on their hoods (which are nearly as high as an Accord roof :).

Thanks all for their responses. I will be looking into a guard/cover for the leading edge and also that Dr ColorChip product. I also think in the future I am going to have to do my car buying research a little better. But as a long time Honda owner, who knew?

thanks again,
Matt

That deflector covers a lot of the hood so it should provide a lot of protection. I got an AVS Aeroskin. Lays flat on the hood and covers from the center of the hood to about hallway of both headlights. I've had the Accord for about 3 months and no chips in the paint. I do seem to get small stains that are hard to remove. Posted picture in another post.

The AVS aeroskin looks kind of cool.

Any thoughts or experience with rock chips, possible rust or oxidation on an aluminum hood? Ford was in the press about aluminum hood corrosion issues. I am curious how well the new 2016 Accord's aluminum hood will hold up, especially with Honda's more eco-friendly paint process that is criticized.

I don't care how thick the paint or clear coat is, if you are traveling at 60 mph and a rock is doing approx. the same, you will get a chip. I feel most of the problem is with the downward slope of the hood more exposed area. I have owned many Honda's over the years, the paint quality is fine. Stop tailgating, dump trucks are a major problem. Every bump causes stone and other debris to fly out of the tailgate. Stay well behind.

The clear plastic paint protection applied by a professional is the only hope to prevent paint damage. The only problem with this process is the cost of course. You can expect to pay about $600 just to have the front bumper, leading edge of hood, and mirrors done. The masks sold by the dealer and other aftermarket companies will cause you more problems that it solves. Dirt, sand, and other debris gets trapped between the mask and the paint and acts like sandpaper scratching the paint. The only way I would ever use the bra/mask is to cover up an already damaged bumper or hood, never to protect good paint.

I have about 7-8 chips in my hood, I bought the touch up paint with the first chip. I've been keeping up just trying to prevent rust under the paint. It doesn't look as good as virgin paint, but it looks better than an uncovered chip.

I just purchased a 2014 Accord Sport 6MT and it has a few paint chips in the front of the hood. I can live with them but I'm concerned about them rusting. They're tiny and appear to be through the paint, into metal but I don't see any rust coloration, only white outline of the primer around the perimeter of the chip and what appears to be grey metal beneath (Modern Steel Metallic paint is the car color). instead of using touchup paint, Would a good wax or sealant keep from rusting?

I got 2 chips in the 1st 800 miles of my car. No tail gating just lots of snow on the ground when it happened. 1 chip is the edge of the hood and the other is the fender just behind the drivers headlight. has anyone used the 3M stuff in wally world? It kinda looks like a "spray on" Clear Bra.

I guess if you like the look of paint chips. Wax is a temporary coating and very thin at that. Once rust begins, it never sleeps, so just keep that in mind.

I have mentioned this before, and here we are again. The paint on 9th gen is super thin. It gets chipped easily. If you have chips, then you know what i mean. My older cars rarely had any chips, and if there was a chip, it was like a pothole chip; yep, it is that thick. In fact, the windshield is thinner too, and gets chipped easily as well. Radiator is thinner, condenser is thinner, hoses are thinner, linings are thinner, battery is slimmer, they cut costs every where in the car.
