I just had to replace my rear crankshaft seal on my 2007 Accord SE V6 AT due to a not-insignificant oil leak. This oil leak appeared rather suddenly at 122k miles. For the record I have religiously changed the oil myself every 5k miles with Mobi1 1 FS and Honda oil filter. Car is driven 75% highway. In other words the car has not been neglected or abused.

I’ve searched the forum and don’t see evidence that this is a chronic problem – at least not yet. Based on ownership of many Honda automobiles over the past 3 decades, this incident seems so un-Honda-like. It seems premature to me for the rear seal to fail at 4 years and 122k miles. The repair is not cheap either – pushing $900 to install a $15 seal.

In the future I now know that anytime the transmission is dropped for any reason I will request the shop replace the rear main seal as preventive maintenance. I had the timing belt replaced at 100k miles and noticed the shop I used replaced the front main seal (and camshaft seals) as part of the package – darn good idea in retrospect.

Would like to hear from anyone with a similar experience and/or problem. Has anyone heard of any TSB’s or other Honda correspondence on this subject?

Pretty rare occurance from what I understand. I talked to Fredsvt on here who works on these cars for a living about it. It happened on my 99 I4 around 75k about 5 or 6yrs old. Bought new, oil changed at dealer every 5k.

First dealer quoted $700 to replace, 2nd dealer quoted $500. I called Honda Corp to see if they could help out any. They agreed to cover half. Besides the rubber seal there was also a metal cover that was replaced also.

After the repair there was flaring btwn first and 2nd gears. Dealer agreed with me and did a drain and fill. Problem solved. Sold at 166k with original trans.

Same issue here

hello my name is jeremy

Funny I have an 07 accord v6 automatic with 113000 mile and all the sudden my rear main went out the dealer quoted me $1200 to replace it then call me and told me his quote was wrong the new quote was 1900 and change I am at a loss here I have never had a cars rear main go out so soon. My 72 datsun still has its original one and it doesnt leak.

I have 07 SE v6 also.

Well, mine didn't go out or leaked bad, it was seepage.
I replaced main seal at 62K miles, under CPO warranty.
Bill I saw was $850. So $1900 quote you got above is just
stupid ridiculous. Don't goto that dealer, you shouldn't pay at most
more than $900 on this $15 part job.

Did you try independent shop?

I found a shop close by that will do it for 400 I am dropping it off tomorrow it will be done by sunday. I would do it my self if I had the time but the wife needs it for work lol. I agree 1900 was flat out nuts even at 100 an hour for labor its a ten hour job only comes out to a grand now add oil, tranny fluid and the part thats only 50 dollars more. That dealer is where my wife and I bought our hondas and my mother inlaw bought hers I can assure you they wont be getting anymore bussiness from us.

Good to hear that you found a local shop.
400 sounds like the right price.

Yeah that dealer doesn't deserve business from you.

I have a 2007 SE V6 with 75k.

I went to the stealership and they replaced my crank, cam, vtec and oil pump seal on CPO power-train warrant, but not with out hassle. originally wanted 1390 and i walked out with a 56 dollar bill because Honda supposedly "good willed" it.

Any ways i still have an oil leak. i do not believe they changed the rear main seal unless one of the seals i mentioned is another name for it??

I dropped my car a long time family friend mechanic to see what work they did do and what is still leaking.

Its weird we almost all have 07 SE V6 or something very similar.

07 Accord EX V6

Just getting ready to sell my accord with 119k miles on it. Never a problem with leaking oil of any kind, until people started looking at it for purchase. Come to find out through the dealer, its a leaking main rear seal.

I wonder if there is a problem with the seal because of overfilled transmission fluid levels. Drove it to Kanab last summer and all of a sudden on the freeway it started downshifting, quickly, and then it was like there was no transmission at all, no reverse or drive. Let it cool down and finished our trip, limping along so as to not overheat the fluid. It was definitely cavitating. I thought that I either had a transmission leak or there wasn't enough fluid in the transmission, so I bought a quart and a hard time getting even 3/4 of the quart in, as it kept overflowing. Long story short, back to the dealership to have them check it out. They insisted that there was two and a half quarts too much transmission fluid. Having only bought one quart, I know I didn't add that much, so where did it come from? I've never added fluid, as I assumed that was being monitored by the dealership when I had my regularly scheduled oil changes performed by them. Is there a possibility that because of the overfilled transmission fluid it put undue pressure on the main rear seal and caused the leak?

The engine and transmission are two different units. Sounds like the car needs a transmission to me.

I'd trade it in. If sold privately the buyer may come after you for repairs. No possibility that the atf caused the rear main to leak. Since engine oil is behind the rear main not atf. Has the transmission been serviced during the 119k miles with frequent drain and fills?

06 V6 6 speed leaked at 59k. Dealer replaced under warranty. Mine was so bad it even saturated the clutch. At 121K, and its still going good.
