So i do a monthly inspection and i see this:
522937

I think "no biggie, i've got that warranty with the dealer".
And as you probably already suspected: it's not covered.
I've been in there three times with issues and none of them were covered.
I wonder what even is covered with this warranty the dealer gave me.
I even asked the dealer and they couldn't tell me, i have to call some other number.
Seems like they just took $1k for this warranty and are making me jump through hoops to even use it.

The dealer stated it was a rear main seal and quoted >$2k.
Not 100% certain it's a rear main seal as i've not checked it myself yet.
I'll be asking the local shop i use for a quote on it tomorrow.

I've done several rear main seals before on previous vehicles. They were all manuals however.
Looks like the only remaining FSM option is a 1 day subscription: Service Express

I do see quite a few other posts about this same sort of oil leak in this area. Kind of worrying...
If the shop quotes me above $1k i'll be attempting it myself and documenting it here.

That doesn't look bad enough to go through all that trouble. How much oil are you adding between changes. Also, chance that you can get new noises/rattles. It's big job on a transverse mounted setup. I'd try high mileage oil which swells the seals a bit before a repair attempt. Also, there's an o ring by the oil pump that is sometimes overlooked when doing the repair, be sure to replace it too.

Yeah that's what extended warranties are... pocket lining for dealers.

If it were me and there wasn't enough fluid to actually drip off the car, I'd put it in the back of my mind and carry on with the day.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I do agree that a small oil leak like this isn't much to get worked up about.

Local shop quoted me $720 if I supply the gaskets and oil. I'd be buying the parts from Honda.

They are booked until the 8th, being one of the only decent shops in my area. Gives me some time to think about it.

Switch to 5W-20 instead of using 0W-20 oil, it might stop. Using high mileage oil with seal conditioner MIGHT help but might do nothing whatsoever. I tried high mileage oil and it did nothing at all. You need to remove the inspection cover and look at how big the oil streak is coming from the crank.

I drove on a leaky main seal for years on my 7th gen V6, I didn't get it replaced until the trans was pulled for a rebuild at 275k miles and 12 years later into the car's life. That gives you an idea how resilient a car can be.

A guy on a 3rd gen TL has done this before, but you need to drop the exhaust and front subframe with a transverse engine support mounted on top to keep the engine up. If you think you can do it, go for it.

My 244k mile 2012 Crosstour V6 has a rear main leak. Switching to Shell Rotella Gas Truck oil 5w20 has cut my oil use significantly. I guess I'll ride that transmission until the ATF filter clogs. Honda, in all their infinite wisdom decided to make it an unserviceable internal filter.

I see an external filter for the 2012 Crosstour V6

I drove a 97 Neon with a leaking rear main seal for 4-5 years. It was quite bad.
I think i lost a quart every two weeks. But the worst part was anytime you wanted to work on the car it was covered in sludge.
From that i have a bit of a personal vendetta against leaking rear main seals lol.
Eventually i had a shop replace it when the clutch blew up.

That's how i did the clutch + throwout bearing + seal on my previous Accord.
Instead of using a transverse engine support bar i just used an engine crane with an old seatbelt.
Now that i have a bit more money, i might invest in one of those bars tho.
The CVT looks almost small enough to go out the top with the engine supported from the bottom.

That works, too. I've even see a guy make a rig out of pieces of 2x4 as a holder for the engine, also using seat belts. Whatever you do, post the pictures and process here.

I'm just curious why a car this young would start leaking oil from the rear main seal though.

I just showed you where the filter is with that diagram above, it is an EXTERNAL filter. You cannot always trust what a shop tells you unless they have worked on the specific models of cars.
A shop didn't tell me and this has been discussed in other forums with the same transmission. It's not serviceable without splitting the engine from the transmission.

Please prove me wrong

I seriously would love to be proved wrong. Sincerely.

You are RIGHT, after inspecting some close-up pictures of the crosstour trans, the filter is there but you need to crack the case open to change it. But honestly, changing the filter does NOTHING whatsoever if you change the fluid frequently. I changed the filter just twice in my 7th gen V6 trans until 275k miles' rebuild and the filter came out darker but not with pasty clutch material. The build-up or clogging of clutch material happens if you let the fluid go for too long. You should look into installing a trans cooler instead, which I have installed across 2 different V6 Accords to make the trans last.

But this thread is not about this is it. It's about rear main seal leaking. Please open a different thread if you'd like to keep the discussion going.

Update: decided to let it go for the moment + clean the engine periodically.

Currently in college and I'd rather use that money for an extra month of rent.

I'll probably fix it myself once I get garage space in about a years time.

Update #2: noticed a valve cover gasket leak.
Replaced the seal when i changed the oil.
Cleaned up all the excess oil under the engine.

To quote myself from earlier in this thread:
The dealer stated it was a rear main seal and quoted >$2k.
Not 100% certain it's a rear main seal as i've not checked it myself yet.
1000 miles later and the bell housing / oil pan area is dry as a bone...
Either it wasn't a rear main seal or the rear main seal only leaks when it's incredibly hot outside.
I should have my answer this summer.

Update: still dry in late August. Even after 700+ miles driving to coast and back several times.
