Two questions:

Is it possible to drive without the key in the car? For example, if one was to accidentally leave their keys on top of the car... and drive.. and the keys fly off mid-drive.. will the car alert me?

This weekend, I went on a 4-5 hour trip. i stopped about midway for gas. I got out of the car, filled up the gas and tried to get back in and i was locked out. I didnt think i could lock myself out but i called Hondacare and they had someone unlock the door.... there was no key inside... looked everywhere, twice.

I know my car beeps if i walk away with the key while i'm in park but i typically dont walk away with the key with the car in drive.

Next question is... If i buy a used, previously programmed key from ebay or something, should it work (assuming its not broken)? I realize ill have to take all keys to the dealer.

Same question for a remote start remote (honda remote, dealer installed)

Thanks :)

It is possible to drive off with your key outside the car as long as the key is remove while the car is running. If you shut it off you will not be able to restart until the key is place inside.

You will be able to buy a used smart key, buy a new uncut key to replace the cut one, go to the dealer and have him cut and program it and you will be ready to go.

Awesome. Thank you so much!

FYI - the prices that dealers in my area charge to get keys programmed varied wildly.
One dealer quoted $150.. the other dealer quoted $47.50. I went to the $47.50 and now i have 3 working keys and a new remote start remote.

Thanks again!

It should have been flashing "No Key" below the odometer while you were driving. Interesting that Honda designed it to lock you out after you shut it off and get out.

The car wouldn't let you lock the doors if the key was inside of it, so keep that in mind in the future. If the key was on top of the car, I'm not sure I never tried to start my car with the key on top.

If the key leaves the car while running, NO KEY will flash on the dashboard and a beep warning will come up as soon as the car doesn't sense the key. That's when the car makes the beep noise outside as well.

When you get the new Smart Key programmed, tell the dealer the old one was stolen and you want it wiped out of the car so it won't ever work again.

I didn't see that indicator on the dash while driving. I know it does that while the car is in park, but i've never tested it while driving (i generally dont toss my keys out the window while driving... :) )

And the car didnt lock itself when i got out. I think i locked it when i got out to get gas (using the button on the door). I just couldnt get back in..

I thought the keys couldnt get locked in the car.... but since the keys werent on me, and my doors were locked, i thought maybe they somehow made it to the back seat or something and they were out of range or something.
I know it says it while the car is running and in park, but i wonder if it says it if it happens while the car is in drive... I'm not sure that many people do that. I'll probably test it myself one day just so i can confirm what i think happened. Lastly, I told the dealer i "lost" my keys, so hopefully they wiped it out. They said i had to bring all of my existing keys with me to get the new ones programmed, so i assume that means the existing ones would not have worked otherwise... at least i hope that's the case!

so long as it isn't off ebay unless you're lucky:rant:

Out of curiosity, when you called HondaCare, how did they open the car? Was that a locksmith coming out to open the door? Or did they send someone from Honda?
I think HondaCare's number just goes to some auto-club or something. They sent a tow truck driver that had a kit to get into cars. He basically put an empty bag between the door and the door frame and put air in it to create a small gap between the door and the door frame. He then used a bent pole to press pull the lock from the inside and unlock it. that's when the alarm went off.. :)

I bought two used key fobs with this part number: ACJ932HK1210A
(now i have 1 driver one, and 2 driver two keys)

and two uncut smart key inserts: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141261921012?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I think my total cost between the two key fobs and the two inserts was roughly $80 dollars

No serial number came with my two keyless fobs (dealer said I didn't need it). However, if I want to cut a blank metal key when I lose one of my fobs, how does Honda know which mold to use? Does my VIN contain this information? Thanx.

My number 2 keyless fob came with a white plastic tag with a key code. Means i can just take that tag to any dealer and they can code a key for me without any further info.

Have you actually had a new key made or are you conjecturing?

Both of my smart keys come with a while "dealer" tag on which are the VIN and some other info, including some codes (not sure if they are "key code").

I bought a blank smart key from eBay for $60 including shipping. The dealer cut the key and programmed the fob for $78. They told me that the tag was not sufficient. I had to bring ALL the keys over. Not only that, they needed access to the car because the programming device had to be plugged into the car. The work was done in the service area, I don't know what was actually done.

I noticed that the driver seat info was lost afterward.

I was told at the time of purchase that the tag was all that was sufficient to reproduce the fob from a dealership (I assume that means buying the fob directly from them, not bringing in one purchased elsewhere). I suppose that is "conjecture" in that no, I have not actually gone in with the tag only and requested a key. But I have no reason to doubt what I was told at my dealership, with whom I do have a long running relationship.

I could say your challenging my statement is mere conjecture as well since you admit you don't know what they actually did, and they could have been simply ignorant of the process and so asked you for the works just to make sure they'd covered every possible base to make sure they could meet your request.

I just had to laugh now as the idea suddenly popped into my head that the ultimate experiment would be to walk into a dealership naked, with nothing but the key tag (and a credit card) and ask them for a new key to get into the car. :laugh. Sorry, just must be time for the weekend or something.

Conjecture: The dealer probably uses a SuperOBD SKP-900 Hand-held OBD2 Key Programmer or the like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPc5aG1HK7g

It's easier to program/verify ALL the keys (new and existing) than trying to match the new key to the existing ones, or programming the new key based on a code (if possible).

Actually, an auto locksmith could have done the job. I called two places, their quoted prices ($120 - $150) were higher than that at the dealer because they accounted for travel time (they have the programmer in their trucks, not at the offices).

I guess I am missing something how did you restart the car without the key?

This last weekend I forgot my smart key and the car started and drove like always until we stopped for lunch and the car would not lock using the door handle button. My wife had her key that is why the car started but I could not lock the doors until she came back to the car with her key.

I don't think you can restart the car without the key.

Without the fob, the outside button won't work. But you can still lock the car using the button inside the car, then close the door. At least that's how my 2015 Touring works.

Called the Honda dealer service department, asked if they could furnish my key code, and almost instantly they provided the seven alpha numeric (caller id apparently brought up my VIN). I assume this is just for the physical hard key -- either in stock or to program the lathe....(?). As for a replacement fob, I assume no key code is really needed, as they take both existing and new fob(s) out to the car to reprogram the whole package. Thus, not sure why a key code would be needed for this part of a new fob/key purchase...

Sound about right?
