A few days ago I was exiting the highway on a loop exit ramp at a pretty good clip in my Sport CVT with transmission in "S" mode. As I was about to merge into traffic at the end of the ramp, I rapidly downshifted with the paddle from 5th gear. Suddenly the car didn't want to accelerate and began slowing. An engine light was blinking on the dash. It was quite unnerving since this occured in an area of the road where cars don't usually slow down and I had cars right behind me, on the ramp, beginning to accelerate to merge into city traffic. I pressed the pedal to the floor and nothing. It was totally bogging down. Threw the hazard lights on and quickly pulled into the emergency lane. I tried switching it to neutral and back, but nothing worked. The engine light kept blinking. It wasn't until I completely shut off the car and restarted that I got throttle control back again. Anyone else experience this?

I seriously don't think an accidental up shift instead of down shift can cause the engine light to blink and forces him to pull over to restart his car...

Why does the cvt transmission even have paddle shifters? I read somewhere that it simulate gears shifting and that they not actual gears.:dunno:

Because the paddle shifters are fun.

Sounds like an engine problem and not a CVT problem. IIRC there's a light on the dash when the CVT is having issues.
I agree! It's def fun merging or driving on curvy roads. I love the fact that it knows u r turning and it holds the gear when u leave it in D.

It just keeps the transmission at a constant, preset "gear" ratio.

Usually a blinking engine light indicates that the engine was misfiring. There should be a stored code that the dealer can pull which will have more information on what went wrong. Take it in ASAP before the stored code clears.

If it happens again, then I'll take it in. It's been several days since it happened.
Doesn't matter. The code should still be in there. I'd recommend you have it scanned for your future safety.

So when you floored it, the engine RPMS still continued to drop?

Did the engine rev at any time during this event, but not move the car?

Was the engine/car bucking?

Yea. +1 Flashing check engine light is very serious. It means you are dumping raw gas into the catalytic converter.

O.P....Is it possible that you downshifted too far? I don't know how this CVT works..but maybe the downshifts would have put the engine past the redline, so rather letting you blow the engine, the computer may have just cut off the fuel and prevented the downshift from occurring. Just a guess. I know most cars, including automatics, will cut the fuel if you take it past the redline.

The Accord CVT and most modern electronically controlled transmissions (e.g. DCT) won't let you downshift into dangerous engine revs. The gear indicator flashes and will beep to let you know this.

Yes, if the CVT is having issues, the gear indicator will just show every possible line on the display. Imagine "X", "D", "S", "1", "2", "3", "4", "5", "6", and "7" were all displayed at the same time.

The engine was simply not responding to my throttle input. Engine did not rev or buck.
