hey this is the story of my ownership of my 2018 2.0T10AT Touring

So i purchased this car in early January of 2018 it looked great it was my first new car (huge upgrade from my 2000 camry). I purchase this new car with a few upgrades (sport grill, illuminated door sills, security system, warranty) for 40k out the door. everything seemed great but literally as im driving it home the tire pressure light comes on. the next day i check all of them are over pressure around 42psi so i bring them to where theyre suppose to be and i did the re calibration procedure described in the manual. light stays on. i go to the dealer they say nothing is wrong we reset something and its fine now. ok

things were fine after that except the paddle shifters never let me rev the car high before changing out of manual mode and up shifting. the car is great otherwise until i was doing 50mph on a highway and suddenly a bunch of warning messages come up on my display (RDM sys, auto high beam, tranny sys, tpms message and light, brake sys message and light, power steering message and light, stability assist, AAC, collision mitigation, hill start assist, and check engine light).i have this on video but i was able to drive no problem. i get home turn the car off and back on everything is ok. nothing looks wrong. but i take it to the dealer they say nothing is wrong they reset something i should be ok.

24 hours later the same thing happens except this time i lost all power. i pull over turn the car off and make sure theres no leaks everything seemed fine. back tot the dealer they say they need to troubleshoot it after 5 hours of waiting someone comes out and asks me if i could get a ride home. i was furious i was like wtf are you talking about my brand new car is my ride home they told me theyre still working on it and they still dont know whats wrong. so eventually they buy me a rental a 2018 sonata. at least carplay worked in that with no issue.

as im taking my rental home they call me to tell me something inside the transmission failed either electronically or mechanically but honda corporate doesnt want us to open the tranny case. they want it to see exactly where the problem is for research so youre going to get a new tranny. so after a week i get my car back with a new tranny and the car seems perfect since its been 4000 miles with it and its been good with no problems.

i felt it was unfair that my new car had this failure not to mention carplay and front parking sensor issues. so i put in a claim with NCDS to which after weeks of negotiating honda paid me 8k to drop the case. since then all my carplay issues were fixed with an update and when the parking sensors freak out i just turn them off.

Tl;dr: got a 2018 2.0t10AT for 40k and after 1,700 miles tranny failed in some way. honda paid me 8k to not get a replacement and stay with the repaired car amd ive been happy with that decision since the car is great otherwise.

If I were you I would run a check on your VIN to see if they disclosed that the vehicle got a new transmission within the first 2,000 miles.

Sounds like a happy ending.

Agreed that sounds like a happy ending with a $8K payout from Honda to you, I would be happy with this outcome.

Unfair seems like the wrong word. Honda sells like 130k cars and trucks a month, unlucky fits the description better, but even then, you got a rental, a new tranny and $8k for your troubles, so it really wasnt unlucky either. There have been far worse stories from dealers treating people bad here.

Exactly. This sounds like fantastic customer support and standing behind the product. Unless I am missing something you had absolutely nothing coming besides a rental car and a new transmission. Sounds like they addressed the problem very quickly and had your car back in a week, which is pretty impressive considering it's brand new and parts supply is terrible - I've been waiting 4 weeks for a steering wheel replacement under warranty due to a rip by the stitching.

I don't know how you negotiated your way into $8k, but you must have learned those skills since somehow dropping $40k on it new lol

There is no such thing as 100% reliable. There will always be a failure rate, however small. It's a complex mechanical device. Hopefully it is a very small failure rate, but time will tell...

The transmission failure was unusual enough that they wanted the old one to troubleshoot/research. I get that.

What I don't get is why they'd pay you $8k for a warranty repair. Their obligation, per the warranty on the car, is to make repairs during the warranty period. They did that, and there's no reason that a new transmission would result in any sort of devaluation of the car. This isn't the same as being in a car accident.

Something isn't right with this one. If Honda is handing out thousands of dollars for doing warranty repairs, all of you guys having HUD trim repairs should be good for at least $500 each.

It is highly unusual and I'd be very, very curious to hear the details of the case and the documentation that was signed. "Squeaky wheel gets the grease" is always true, but I can't imagine enough squeaking to justify $8k over a warranty claim and some annoyances unless lemon law was involved.

It does sound a bit fishy doesn't it?

He did say he put in a claim with NCDS (National Claims Dispute Settlement) which Honda uses, but generally you would have had to been in more than once for the same issue that hadn't resulted in the car being back on the road in normal operating condition, basically filing a lemon claim. This doesn't appear to be a case that would fit a lemon claim being as it was taken and resolved.

Those North Carolina Dental Society guys are great negotiators!

Honda has a reputation for great products, and when failures occur, great responsibility. And lord knows they've had tranny problems for years and years, though yours seems more electronic.

Disappointing as that all has been, it does sound like a happy ending.

… and I do keep collecting these stories of people getting very healthy bribes from many different car companies, when these lemon-law borderline cases show up.

I am laughing because every time I read "I can't believe I bought this POS!" on this forum my FIRST reaction is, why is this guy talking about the Point of Sale system he bought?

Honda has NOT had "transmission problems for years and years". For about 4 years of production (and the design was corrected 13 years ago!), they had a problem with their automatic transmissions mated to their V6 engines. THAT is the "transmission problem". Not perfect, but please don't leave out the qualifier! Your waitress will thank you!

It's a new transmission and it has a bazillion moving parts and a computer. There's bound to be some failures of a new technology for Honda. Of course had he gotten the one with the proven CVT transmission, this would never have happened.:laugh

The ten speed is a new technology for Honda and it's a device with a bazillion moving parts connected to a computer. If you had gotten the proven CVT transmission with would never happen.:laugh

He'd also be driving a CVT. I'll take the trans replacement and driving a Sonata for a week please...

^^ This. My first thought was, what are you complaining about?????????? They fixed your car and paid you 8 grand? You poor widdle thing, still got your bottom lip out and whining like a 2-yr old.

It's good to see that Honda wanted the transmission back whole. That means they at least care enough about the failure to go figure out what failed vs. just "throwing a part at it" and hoping it was a one-off problem.

There's nothing wrong with a CVT! I don't know why there's this anti-CVT group on this site. The CVT works great, it's smooth and always keeps the RPM in the sweet spot for acceleration. The uneducated who don't understand the 'variable' part call this 'motor boating' or 'drone'. The CVT delivers great gas milage because it keeps the engine running at the most efficient RPM. One owner on this site has reported 400,000 miles on his CVT Accord without any problems. The CVT operates differently than a geared transmission because it has continuously variable 'gear ratios'. Different is not bad, it's only different.

While my Accord was in the body shop I rented an Infinity G50 Sedan. It had a turbocharged V6 with a geared transmission. The transmission drove me nuts sometimes because it didn't know what gear was best for the situation and jerked around either due to turbo lag or just plain confusion on acceleration. I have both an Accord and a 2015 CRV with CVT transmissions and they operate flawlessly.
