Hey All

Yesterday I picked up a certified 2010 accord exl 4 door for 16,930 with 25,000 miles. The deal was done but then another sales person kind of sold my wife on the Honda care warranty saying it cost 2400 bucks to add bumper to bumper coverage for 7/100,000 warranty. She thinks we got a good deal for it at 1530 for the coverage. The sales person said you could only buy it right then and if not we had to sign a waiver declining it. I was kind of regretting my decision and usually go into situations with some background. I did some search’s and it seems like you could cancel within 30 days. We paid by bank check for the car and charged the warranty. I have read the forums and saw that a dealer in RI offer the same warranty for 895. I am not sure if the warranty is for new only and they are currently closed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Was the car certified by the dealer? If it is certified, it carries a 7yr/100,000 mile warranty bumper to bumper for FREE. This is offered by Honda, not the dealer. New vehicles only come with 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty. If it was not certified this could mean it was in an accident which Honda will not certify it. Was it a warranty or a maintenance plan? Read the fine print on the backside of the warranty. It will give specifics on how to cancel. I am a previous Honda Salesman.
You are way off the mark. The 7yr/100,000 mile is only for POWERTRAIN. There is a 12 month/12,000 mile extension to the factory 3yr/36,000 mile standard warranty with the certified vehicles. Or if the OP's certified car had an expired factory warranty, a 12 month/12,000 "bumper to bumper" warranty will be applied for free.

JM accord is correct. I did buy it certified. But then at the dealer another salesman said that Honda care warranty would cover everything Bumper to Bumper for the 100,000/ 7 year. Still hoping i didn't get swindled.

It comes down to your tolerance for expenses relating to unexpected repairs AFTER the CPO coverage expires.

I bought the Acura extended warranty for $1k in 1997 for the pre-owned 1996 Integra GSR, I made out like bandits at the end of the coverage time with over $5K worth of repairs the extended warranty covered, I only paid out around $125 for the $25 deductibles each time I made a claim.

The same warranty in 2007 when I bought the 2005 Accord I drive now was $3K IIRC, I decided not to buy it and take my chance.

As it turned out, the only item that would have been covered before the extended warranty expired was ONE rear wheel bearing that was slinging out grease, I ended up fixed it myself with parts purchased from Rock Auto, cost me $70 in parts and half hour of my time since I had the tools and skills. My now 8-year old 2005 Accord has been the most reliable of the 4 Honda/Acura vehicles I have owned in the last 30 years.

You have to remember, Honda is banking on making money on these extended warranties, most people will either not use it, or use it for less the amount of the premium, therefore making a profit for Honda, likely a handsome profit too.

Can anyone tell me if i could cancel it ? I looked in my paper work and i only have the bill of sale. I was told warranty info would be mailed.

Steve
Yes you can. We cancelled ours after the fact. The premium you paid gets refunded to whomever the financing went through, it is applied straight to principal. It is a huge profit maker for the dealer and if you do decide to cancel, go straight to the dealer to do it. Be firm though, they will 'sale' harder than you've ever been sold anything in your life to keep you with it (that was our experience anyway).

As far as the cost of it, a million dealers, a million different prices.

You can cancel in the first 30 days, take the money and put it in an account and use it to pay any repairs or maintenance and you will be way ahead. As a CPO you should have gotten a 7year /100k powertrain warranty and that covers the following:

Engine
Cylinder block and cylinder head(s) and all internal lubricated parts; flywheel; manifolds; oil pan and oil pump; timing belt (for failure only), cover and tensioner; valve train; water pump; and engine mounts; seals and gaskets.

Transmission
Transmission/transaxle/transfer/differential case and all internal parts; seals and gaskets; torque converter transmission mounts, clutch master cylinder; slave
cylinder; shift cable, seals and gaskets.

Drive System
Axle shafts; propeller shafts; gears and internal parts; driveshaft, wheel bearings; retainers; universal and CV joints, and rear axle hub and bearings, seals and gaskets.

And you still have the 12/12,000 warranty for everything else. You will be fine without the extended warranty, huge profit item for the Dealer, expect a hard time cancelling.

I think I am more mad at being lied too. I was made to believe that it could not be bought after the fact along with it normally costs 2400 dollars. My wife likes the bumper to bumper warranty idea. So here is the kicker , i live in Connecticut and bought the car in NY. It was a 3 hour drive. I imagine if i do cancel over the phone they may hang up on me. I wonder if i could cancel through Honda and not deal with the dealership.

1. You can cancel at any time. The amount refunded is pro-rated.
2. If the car is financed the money DOES NOT go to you, it goes to the finance company.

Charged on credit card. I will see what the dealer says tomorrow.

Steve
In that case, you simply ask for it to be refunded. Like I said before they will try like heck to get you to keep it because it's a money maker for them. If they are insistent on you keeping it I guess you could always tell them you'll just contact the credit card company and let them handle it.

Here is what you should do if the dealer tries very hard to dissuade you from canceling HondaCare. Print out a quote from Saccucci or Hyannis, and tell the dealer to match. In most cases, the dealer would match and/or throw in some stuff. They may also give you tons of BS about how warranty bought out of state is not effective (not true). If you haven't filled out the CSI survey, threaten to ding them hard on the entire purchase experience.

If push comes to shove, you can always cancel by calling Honda and get a prorated refund (which should virtually be a full refund at this point), but it's important to remember that Saccucci and other dealers will charge you a premium ($100-150, I think) if you had a HondaCare on the vehicle before and then canceled. They ask you that on the HondaCare application, and Saccucci also asks you that question when it gives you a quote. So, it's definitely better to unwind the deal altogether. Also, I am not 100% sure, but if you cancel through Honda, the unsavory salesman might get to keep the commission.

Good luck.

So the above quote is what i was sent. I am just going to max out my coverage. Said i had 60 days to cancel. Said they see this all the time. I am just going to max out my coverage. They were very nice to deal with as well. Also said they would cancel with Honda and i do not even need to notify the dealer i bought it from.

Dealerships have the reputation they have, for a reason.

THEY are out to make money and don't give a damn about you after you leave.
