Greetings!

I've searched and can't find modern, helpful info for this.

Background:
  • My parents bought a 2003 V6 automatic sedan new in September 2002.
  • They gifted it to me in 2018 [slipping transmission (2-3 shift), drooping headliner, bald tires, needing timing belt service].
  • I fixed everything except the transmission. Interior/exterior are in great shape.
  • I performed a single transmission fluid change; and replaced pressure switches. That minimized the slipping by quite a bit, but it still happens once every 100 miles or so. It has not improved or worsened since doing the work approximately seven years ago.
  • Recently decided it's time to either fix the slippage; or sell the car.

I intend to rebuild the transmission myself. Questions:
  • Recommended brand rebuild kit?
  • Reputable source to buy the kit?

Rebuilt costs me about $2500 but that was many years ago now, the shop used all Raybestos clutch packs. The shop will need to rebuild the torque converter clutch disk onsite at the shop. I imagine it would probably cost $4000 these days. Once the clutch packs are worn, nothing you do externally can help the situation, there are just temporary patch fixes. It's like a manual transmission, you just need to open it up and change out the clutch after so many miles.

You can sell the car if you deem this not worth it, the question is how much will you spend on a new car or a 'new' used car with unknown problems?
 
i got steel and clutch discs from rockauto. the steels you need to know the correct part number and enter it into the part number search. they arent listed by make or model. the clutch discs you can order from the regular part catalog under make/model. the seal kit i ordered from a transmission parts place online. Precision of new hampton for a completely rebuilt quality torque converter.
 
pretty sure this is your application too but it’s the one I used rebuilding mine. I added the steels and the shift kit, note the shift kit has some modifications to the valve body plates to do… so you will be “fabricating “ if you go this route. It comes with the raybestos gpx frictions disk (good stuff). I ordered a torque converter from somewhere else can’t remember. OPT had great customer service. You gotta verify that you have either the BAYA or MAYA transmission code first. Rebuilding yourself will cost between 1200 & 2000 pending add ons maybe even more.
