I thought I would mention this because I have not seen it mentioned elsewhere. My salesperson from my Honda Dealer (Southeastern Honda in Melbourne, Fl) stated that a firmware update scheduled for April 2019 will allow for Wireless Carplay connectivity in my 2018 Accord 1.5 Sport. I brought it this to his attention of the salesman again when i was getting my 2.0 key fob programmed for Remote Start Hack and he confirmed it once again. He stated that this system update will be available via a Smartphone Connection or through a downloadable USB to System firmware update.

Yeah those guys don't know anything. They are the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to corporate information, especially software development. The car has all the requirements for wireless CarPlay and wireless charging is not a requirement. I find it interesting he specifically mentioned the 1.5t Sport. Is the 2.0t Sport not qualified? No EX, EX-L, or Touring? I'd take this with many grains of salt.

What's the advantage? is this more for the wireless charge option in the Touring?
For me the advantage would be to use CarPlay without having to charge my phone. I'll charge my phone when I feel the need to.

I don't see this as a perk at all. The infotainment unit is essentially just a mirror of your iPhone. The iPhone does all the work. In order for wireless carplay to work your phone and car will establish a WiFi connection as Bluetooth cannot handle the transmission of that amount of data.

Unless you have an unlimited plan this will blow through data at an extremely high rate.

Good thing all carriers offer unlimited plans.

Wow I had no idea! Thank you mentioning that. But not all people have unlimited plans. If you don't know how wireless carplay works you could end up pretty upset if your data is gone and you don't know why. Which is why I made that post.

No worries, The Accord Sport 1.5T is what I purchased. The conversation about Carplay came about when I was being shown/sold on the features of the car. I was told at the time of purchase when to expect an update. Later, I went back to the dealership to have the 2.0T key fob programmed to my 1.5T, I inquired again about the Carplay update. This time it was explained as a standard system update across all Carplay capable Accord Trim Models. Hope this helps.

This is a big news if true, too good to be true. I was willing to wait for 2019 model if it has better chance of having wireless carplay.

many posts here have mis-information. with or without carplay, your phone uses the same amount of data. The only difference is that your phone projects data to your car monitor, through wifi connection, to mirror whatever on the phone, similar to airplay. This is a big requirement for carplay to have wifi chip.

What's the advantage? is this more for the wireless charge option in the Touring?
what is the advantage of bluetooth that everyone has been using for years? you got in your car and your music plays. You don't have do anything. You got a phone call and you don't have to do anything. The same would apply to carplay, except carplay is much more advanced than bluetooth. bluetooth can't do navigation, live Waze, or receiving/sending messages. Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth to transmit the amount of data like wifi which carplay uses.

In fact, Carplay can do anything that your phone can do. but Apple/Google won't allow that due to safety.

First of all, I am not getting my hopes up (mainly because I use AA not CarPlay).

Second, this would not blow through any more of your wireless data than a wired CarPlay connection would. Cellular data would be used for any sort of data needed for maps, music, etc., but the wifi connection between phone and the car would handle the screen mirroring, and the transfer of music TO the head unit.

What this WILL likely do is drain your phone battery more quickly, since wifi uses more power than a bluetooth connection.

That would be true for things like GPS. However if I'm listening to music stored on my iPhone and it is connected to the car via the USB port then I would not be using any cellar data, no? If I was doing it wirelessly then it would be using data to transmit the music to the car I assume.

Sound quality is also much better through a wired connection then Bluetooth.

BMW infotainment is buggy as hell. I tried wireless CarPlay in my brothers X3 and it never worked.

Transmission of your music stored on the iphone locally would be done via wifi in the example when NOT connected via USB. Wifi data transmission between the phone and the car does not use any data from your phone plan. If it was streaming music from something like Pandora or Apple music ("internet radio" station), it would use cellular data to get the music from the cloud to your phone.

The benefit is that you can use wireless charging (if you have it) and never have to connect your phone to anything. Charging is wireless and AA/CP is wireless. That's a win.

Or... If you feel like, you can use your fast charging adapters. Currently, AA and CP don't provide fast charging
