Hello,

I have been eyeing some of the used Accords in the dealerships to see if they will have some good deals. Currently have a 2010 V6 and love the performance of it. I test drove a I4 2010 before buying the V6 and at the time didn’t think I4 had enough power. But ever since having some engine issues/sounds with the engine and reading more about similar issues others had with the V6, wanted to ask if the 9th generation Accord V6s are more problematic than the I4s. Of course we’d love to get a V6 but if I4 is more reliable we may go with that.

Thank you

You've probably heard about the VCM "issue". However, you can easily disable it with an engine flash or buy purchasing a one of the inexpensive VCM disablers. Definitely get your hands on one if you budget allows for it.

2014 4 cyl here.
149,000
Seems fine, only had to do a water pump at 105 and starter at 115
Edit. I changed the cvt fluid at 40k ,80k and triple changed at 120k
And your V6 Accord? What repairs and maintenance have you done for comparison?

In my case my V6 is at almost at 120k. I had the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs etc all done at 102k miles, including valve adjustment. We bought it second hand, the engine always ran a bit more noisier than I though it would but recently it started some different noise (I’ll copy the thread below), not sure if it will cost me even though the engine does not have too many miles. I also was reading about the VCM issues and the P0302 code issues that people are having. I also had the same code in 2018 but it was after the timing belt replacement and another valve adjustment took care of it. I also hear some whining coming from the transmission even though we babied the car so I’m not sure if it is worth dropping any more money into this car.

Here’s my thread for my car 2010 EX-L V6 engine noise - cam lobes?

Just giving him insight on the 4 cyl... Rick.

My V6 Toyota, while enjoyable to toss around is definitely a gas hog. The accord with the V6 will have the same mpg trade off, the timing belt needs to be done at 100k...

The 4 cyl is a fine car, rick
Sorry but this comparison isn't what the OP is asking for. I have the J35 V6 and the 9th gen version is the best. It's strong, plenty powerful, and reliable. I'm on my 2nd Accord V6, ran the 7th gen version to 195k miles, current 8th at 144k, only regular maintenance on both. Do a search, the bar is at the top of the main page.

I4 here. Very reliable for us as we currently have 80,000 mi on it. Only done regular MM required oil changes and an air filter or two. Runs factory new. Does not burn a drop of oil between changes. Has nice power wether on the highway or in city with 4 adults in the car. Still gets 38mpg + on the highway. Would I buy one again? Hell yes.

Having a member- regardless of how well-intentioned, tell you that they have a (V6 or I4) with (no/tons of) issues doesn't mean jack.

Your question is "wanted to ask if the 9th generation Accord V6s are more problematic than the I4s."

And post #2 answered it best. Neither engine nor transmission is more problematic than the other.

4 is definely more reliable,
a lot lower maintenance costs.

Get the V6! I owned a 2006 and 2013 Accord with the I4. I love my 2016 Accord Touring. I have about 53k on it now. Gas is cheap now and I found that my gas mileage didn't drop very much because the V6 gets decent mileage if you can keep your foot out of it:)

Thank you, so it sounds like you did not do the VCM Muzzler? I was also wondering if this issue affects the 9th Gen Accords too.

Thank you for responding. When you say lower maintenance costs, what have you come across on the V6 that you would pay less on the I4?

V6 has a timing belt which needs replaced every Decade or 100k. Has 2 more spark plugs/coils, extra exhaust parts and 3rd catalytic converter. Extra head and valve cover. All translates to more maintenance needs/costs and some extra gas.

I disagree that the Inline 4 is more reliable after 200k. Before 200k is a crapshoot for any to debate. Seems like the V6 in my humble opinion trumps long term if cared for. The power difference makes it a no brainer for my liking.

Wow, that was helpful! What happened to Mr. Niceguy?
Thank you, K.

Call me "Mr. Reading Comprehension".

The question did not ask for individuals to state how much they like their I4 or V6, nor what went wrong in their I4 or V6. The OP asked something else. And the answer was in post #2.

Lots of existing threads about the 4 cylinder vs. the 6 cylinder (the timing belt vs. timing chain, the MPG rating, the manliness of passing someone on the highway, etc...)- which this thread is morphing in to.

For anyone coming across this thread (DriveAccord member or visitor), neither engine is more problematic than the other. Each is a very reliable power plant.

Existing reliability thread started by @slimm1469 6 years ago...

You are correct, since it is going that way, I am doing my own search for those subjects in other threads. Thank you all.

^No, this is a good discussion. But these engines have been out for a while and each engine has it's own issues.

How about a listing of the common problems, rather than "I got a V6 (or I4) and no issues!"

e.g. Each engine has a distinct starter problem. Not all owners experienced this, but enough that each engine has it's own thread...
