Currently leaking all around the valve cover gasket at 126K for 2013 Sport. There was no leak, oil level on the dipstick never moved until 110K or so. All of a sudden all the leaks happening.

Should I have switched to High Mileage oil around 100K? Right now oil is near the bottom mark after 6K miles and 40% left.

Anyone experienced similar and switched to High mileage oil or maybe thicker oil to reduce/eliminate the leak?

Thanks for reading...

Leaking valve cover are normal with high mileage cars. If you’re not mechanically challenged it’s a small job probably an hour max. And about 20-$40 depending if you go aftermarket or oem. Hardest part is usually changing the gaskets for the spark plugs. Just look up the torque for the valve cover bolts.

Hardest part for me was squeezing the RTV tube into those four specific spots before putting the cover back on. Probably because I’m familiar with plug tube well seals.

For those that haven’t done a valve cover gasket before, you should have an inch-pound torque wrench for the job.

Sudden valve cover gasket failure could be a sign of a failed PCV.

I may attack the PCV valve replacement first and then monitor oil loss on the dipstick going forward. Gasket replacement is something I am trying to avoid doing it myself or paying someone else to do it.

As mentioned it's mileage. My 8th gen V6 with 151k has seepage, not bad, but I know I'll have to change the gasket at some point.

I have over 160,000 miles on my engine and it's weeping around the valve cover. I plan on changing when the weather gets warmer. While I'm in there will I be able to inspect the valves for carbon build up? Will I need a scope?

You do need a scope to see inside the head on the intake side. The valve cover does not give you access to the back side of the valves, only to the valve train and the spark plugs. You would need to either remove the intake manifold or go through the throttle body with a scope to see the backside of the intake valves.

I would NOT go high mileage oil for a leaking valve cover gasket, it's a two hour job, max.
Do not go to thicker weight oil. These engines rely on the correct weight because of the VTEC capability.

If you're not that handy with tools, it's not even a hard DIY and can be accomplished with a simple few tools, including a 10mm socket and ratchet set, a screwdriver and pliers, basically..
if you don't have an "inch pounds" torque wrench, you can probably rent one at an auto parts center somewhere.
If, later on you've got the mileage going way up and the leaks/seepage starts happening in a hard to reach, or, more costly area to repair, yeah, ok..

But for a valve cover gasket job??, Noooo, that's a fairly easy fix.
Plus, at the very least you can re-torque the cover bolts and see if it stops leaking.

This is what I'd check first.

And keep any of those "high mileage" oils as far from your car as you can get them.

I just had mine replaced at roughly 190,000 KM, it was starting to seep. I had the valves adjusted too. Good point with the PCV valve, just don’t replace it with an aftermarket valve. Learned a very expensive lesson with an aftermarket valve on my Civic.

Agreed. The OEM is a little pricy for a PCV (I remember paying $25 or so), but it’s also a stupidly overly complicated PCV, where an aftermarket is likely to underwhelm. However, it’s also brilliantly designed to be very easy to install.
