Do you change your oil based on the MM?

When do you like to change your oil? Every 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, 7,500 miles or 10,000 miles?

Do you DIY or go to the dealership?

Do you use oem recommendation of 0W20 or something else? I use 0W16.

Do you happen to have your oil change videos or pictures that you wish to share?

Feel free to share anything interesting about your choice of oil or oil change interval. Or post a used oil analysis if you have one to share.

The 10thgen has a thread like this, and it is a very useful thread. It would be nice to have one on here.

I owned a 2020 HAH base model for 3 years and put 107,100 miles on it when I traded it in for my 2024 HAH EX-L.

I took my 2020 Accord only once to the dealership for service. That was for its first oil change. Since then I did all my maintenance, and my car never went to the dealership for any service whatsoever.

I used to change my oil using 0W16, which is not the OEM recommendation of 0W20. I use 0W16 becausr the HAH in Japan uses only 0W16, and I so bought a bunch of oil on sale for $2 a quart that I have been using over the yesrs to change my oil.

In my 2020 Accord, I used 0W16, 0W20, 0W30, 5W20, 5W30, and 10W30. I mixed different grades for different reasons. But I used all those grades in my 2020 HAH.

Right now, at home, I have some leftover 0W16, 0W20, and 10W30. I have enough oil for 5 oil changes. I plan to be using 0W16 in my 2024 HAH EX-L. When that is finished, I will go to 0W20. If I need top off oil before my next oil change, I will use 10W30.

I plan to do my own oil change every 10,000 miles. Since I hypermile, I believe out of the 10,000 miles, I am sure 2,000 to 3,000 miles was on pure EV mode. So, changing my oil every 10,000 miles sounds good to me.

I also have transmission fluid that I bought for cheap. Worth $9 for 3 quarts. So, each CVT fluid change I do on this car would cost me just $9. But I guess it will be a year or 2 before I do a CVT fluid change on this car.

Here is my stash of engine oil and transmission oil that I have at home. They are leftover from when I had my 2020 HAH. I will keep these and use them when needed for my 2024 HAH.

I do not plan to take this vehicle to the dealership for any service whatsoever for atleast 3 years or more.

I would use 0w-20. I don't put a bunch of miles on the car so I change mine every 6 months at about 3k. Also, your car has no CVT but a clutch pack that has been said that needed the fluid changed around 30k? Have no idea what fluid it takes.
I prefer to use 0W16. I used it on .y 10thge. and car always oerfromed flawlessly. All the Honda Accords in Japan use 0W16. I bought tons of 0W16 for $2 a quart. So, I will use it until it is all gone before I use something else.

You are very correct that this car does not have a transmission, but hard for people to fully understand that is why they call it eCVT. Also, since the dealership offers a "Transmission" fluid change service, some people conclude that means we have a transmission.

You can see a picture of the fluid we use in the picture I posted above. That is the fluid we use for our transmission fluid change. I think we are supposed to do it like every 50,000 or 60,000 miles, but I was doing it every 20,000 miles in my 10thgen. It cost me $9 to do it instead of over $200 at the dealership.

I now have fluid for oil change and transmission fluid change that has to last me atleast 2 years from today. And this is leftover from when I had my 10thgen.

My plan is for this car to not go to the dealership for any service whatsoever for the next 3 years or more. I have no reason to need any service from the dealership during this time. My 10thgen went 3 years without going to the dealership for anything. Just the first oil change and that is because I was on a road trip with my car from Texas to Maryland. I was in Maryland and went to a Honda dealership for an oil change.

I put about 33,000 miles a year on my 10thgen. It never needed the dealership. I refer to that car as a maintenance free car.

I doubt my 11thgen will see 33,000 miles a year, so it better be maintenance free like my 10thgen was. That means my car will never go to the dealership for any service for atleast 3 years. To match what my 10thgen did. I will be doing all the regular maintenance myself.

As far as materials, there is no right or wrong answer. Using any 0W-20 full synthetic oil at your local Walmart or Advance Auto or Autozone or Napa or whatever is local to you will be fine. Oil filters from different brands use the same structure, but just different quality materials inside. For a more premium oil filter, look for one with synthetic media. This type of media will hold up better over time and miles. An example of this is a Fram Ultra Synthetic oil filter. Some just call it a Fram Ultra. It's regarded as a good oil filter, and you can buy it from just about anywhere. I've used it on everything from SUVs to high performance vehicles that are high revving V8s. It has performed well in all scenarios.

Just because Honda sells oil and oil filters don't make their product the best. They have to meet a price point like everyone else. Honda does NOT make their own oil, a different manufacturer makes it for them. While using Honda's oil and oil filter is perfectly fine to do, it's a middle of the pack product. There is definitely better out there.

I use 0W16 with Fram filter or Mobil One filter. I buy my filters from Walmart. I bought my oil 2 years ago. And I will have them for another 2 years or until I use them all up.

I also have oil for transmission fluid change. I will keep them for 2 years until I use them all up. I have enough for 3 transmission fluid changes. I may do my first transmission fluid after 40,000 miles. And then every 20,000 miles after that. I have enough oil to last me untill my car gets to 100,000 miles, if I change my eCVT oil every 20,000 miles.

Honda does not recommend 0W16 for our cars, but I have been using it in my 10thgen and I will use it in my 11thgen.

Honda Accord Hybrid in Japam uses 0W16.

I never follow MM, I just remember. It's a high mileage Accord and the oil gets changed every 3k miles. It's had a diet of Valvoline since new.

If you're in it for the long haul, IMO every 6 months or 5k. I simply stock up on filters and the recommended oil grade when they're on sale. With all the starting and stopping of a hybrid oil is more critical IMO. The extra 10 oil changes per 100k miles is like 300 DIY bucks, I'm ok with that.
As a low mileage driver, I'll stretch the interval a little to have the convenience of changing the oil when its warm in the garage.

Nice. How many miles do you put on each in a year before changing them out? What cars?

Haven't done my 23 HAH yet but I always did my own oil changes at around 7500 miles on my last 2 cars, my 03 Civic and 13 Genesis Sedan. My car has 2 yrs free maintenance so I will probably take it to the dealership and have them do it until I have to start paying for it then do it myself after that. My oil was just changed right before I bought the car at 6k miles and I'm interested to see when the MM will come on based on my driving habits.

@PetitFrereAccord , I split driving between my old Gen 2 Odyssey (230,000+ miles) and an equally old Gen 2 Acura Sedan, so each sees only about 6,000 miles per year.

Still use the Ody van for towing to move appliances, furniture and tools (property management gig), usually 1,500 to 2,000 lbs. total on the drawbar. Any heavier than that, and I use a trailer with surge brakes. Still only consumes less than 20 ounces of oil in a year despite the severe service.

Pair of 8th Gen Accords and trio of 9th Gen Civics drive 9,000 to 12,000 miles per year. V6 Accord has about same oil consumption as the Odyssey, the I4 Accord is close to a quart per year, now.

The Civics don't consume any oil that I can see over the course of a year.

0W-20 Mobil 1 HM EP oil for everything. Oversized Mobil 1 filters for the Odyssey and Acura, OEM-sized AmSOil filters for the other five vehicles.

I love OVERSIZED filters. I bought one for my 2020 HAH but the tight space did not allow it to fit.

When I do the oil change on my 2024 Accord, I will buy the oversized filter and a regular filter. I will try to fit the oversized filter first. If it fits, great! If the space is as tight as my 2020 HAH, then it will not fit. But I really prefer oversized filter.

Well, it seems you do not put many miles on your cars. So, your oil change can easily be done yearly or you can seriously go past yearly. I do not see any problem with that.

I've usually followed the MM for oil changes in my Hondas (owned 3 so far). Exceptions would be if there's another service I'm doing where it makes sense to change the oil like the timing belt.

I don't usually consider time too much though, my Odyssey is a great example of that. It's only been around 4k since the last oil change and the MM is at 40% right now, but it's been almost a year and a half. I probably would change it before taking it on any extended trips, but for its current use which is just very occasional (I do mean it, it's had well under 2k miles put on it in the last year) around town driving, it gets the job done.

Do you DIY or go to the dealership?
How about none of the above?

If I'm already there for something else, I'll have my usual independent shop change it, but I won't usually go there for just an oil change as it's a bit far for that. For just a routine oil change I usually don't mind a place like Walmart doing it. I know some people avoid such places, but so far I haven't had a bad experience with them and it's convenient.

The specified oil for my Odyssey is 5W-20, it was 5W-20 for my 2010 Accord, and it's 0W-20 for my 2012. I always stick with the recommended, haven't had a reason to deviate. I used to run synthetic blend in my Odyssey a lot of the time, but after crossing over the 100k hill, I've leaned more towards full synthetic. My 2010 had a chronic oil burning issue, so I always used full synthetic in it to try and help as much as possible. I've only had my 2012 long enough to do one oil change on it as part of the timing belt service, but I again kept with the recommendation of 0W-20 and used full synthetic.

I did decide to get a UOA done on the used oil from the first change I did on my 2012 to try and get some insight on the previous owner's maintenance habits and since I was curious about the whole UOA process as I'd never done it before. I've attached the report to this post if you're curious.

I would at least change it once a year if you don’t have the mileage requirement. That’s what I do on my other vehicle since I don’t put enough miles on it to go by miles. Works for me.

I myself never go buy what manufacturer says. I believe they will tell you incorrect so that when warranty runs out you already have ill effects leading to parts replacement issues. If they say 7500 mi I’d change it at 4,000 or 5,000 depending on conditions and color of the oil. I have an 05 accord 2.4 that I used to change at 5,000 but now at 4,000 because it has 460,000 mi on it. I also will tell you to follow religiously the 30,000 transmission fluid change. I’ve only had to replace starter and of course filters and plugs. Great great cars!
