Did the first oil change on my 03 today. Some moron at a Firestone used a torque wrench to crank on the oil filter to somewhere in the 3000 ft-lb range. So I jacked up the drivers side (with the drain plug still out) to get that sucker off. I noticed that oil started draining again when I jacked it up. When I added oil it took the entire 5 qts and that was at the full line.

Anyone ever experience such a thing?

As a matter of fact when I change the oil on my 4 cyl the front is usually on ramps and it drains overnight. That's probably overkill but my thinking is that gets as much of the dirty oil out as possible. When it's time to refill it takes in the neighbourhood of 5.2 litres to get to the top mark on the dipstick although the owners' manual listed capacity is 4.2 litres.

I'm not worried about it. Just surprised is all and was just wondering.

I know many members on this forum just pour in the entire 5 qt jug and call it a day.
I've read that here. I wouldn't do it if it went over the high mark. Last thing you want is whipped motor oil.

My 7th gen 2.4 would take the entire 5 quart jug and be right at the full mark on the dipstick. My 8th gen takes around 4.5 quarts to hit the full mark, I poured the whole 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 in and it went over.

Member "chris918" (and several of his other usernames, lol) is a proponent of the 5 quart jug for this reason. He strives for five- and I ain't talking veggies per day here.

I am a proponent of using the markings on the dipstick. The car should be on level ground.

You can dump all 5, just prepare for foamed up oil that's not really being pumped and lubricating the engine. I've overfilled once at the beginning of wrenching years ago. I had a problem with hard starting after that, had to drain back out. If it really doesn't matter, then car manufacturers wouldn't put low and high marks on the oil dipstick would they? Then I found that a lot of people just get lazy and empty the entire jug. Compensating for oil burning is a valid reason to overfill, but you have a different set of problems if oil is burning off quickly, like 1 qt./1000 miles.

C'mon dude, you know that's not true. Five quarts takes the 2.4 to the fill line. If I add anything below that, I'm below full. It would probably take a few more quarts to reach the crankshaft and whip up the oil.

Both times I've changed the oil on the 7th Gen now I've found I need the entire 5 qts to get to full after letting the engine run for a couple minutes after the first 4.5 qts to soak the new filter through.

It might relate to how long you wait to check the oil after shutting off the engine.
I try to check it after it sits a night between changes. That wouldn't be the case if I just changed it, though and am topping it up then.

Maybe next time I'll put in 4.5 first and then check it the next day.

I can't say for sure what's the deal here, since I don't even have an I4, but maybe people who get the entire 5 quarts in are changing the oil on a "not quite level" surface, or they are using a jack or letting it drip overnight, to get extra oil out. I don't remember any V6 owners saying they get 5 quarts in without going over the upper mark.

I have an 03 Accord and an 06 Element which have the same engine model. I bought them new and pour all 5 quarts of Mobil1 in at each oil change. Since I also change the filter, it consumes some of the oil and sometimes the level is slightly above full and sometimes it is exactly at full. At the most, it is only 1/2 quart difference and I have never had a problem. Maybe I just jinxed my self....
