I can't say for sure what's the deal here, since I don't even have an I4, but maybe people who get the entire 5 quarts in are changing the oil on a "not quite level" surface, or they are using a jack or letting it drip overnight, to get extra oil out. I don't remember any V6 owners saying they get 5 quarts in without going over the upper mark.
I've had the Accord since 2008. It's always been 5 qt to fill. Garage floor is level. I don't drain overnight or even for ten minutes. I drain hot and the minute it starts dripping, I'm done. I also prime the filter before installing. Prevents clatter. I always run the engine and check again a few times. The dipstick says exactly full. I don't give it a second thought anymore.

I'm not trying to discount the manual, just telling you what I see on the stick. How many quarts for the V6?

In the service manual, the capacity is 4.4 qts including filter change for the I4. 4.5 qts including filter change for the V6. I always put in almost exactly 4.5 qts for the V6 to get to the top mark. If I happen to dump more then it goes over quickly. So I'm wondering where the half quart of extra oil is going for the 4 cyl engine.

Yeah, it seems strange. Note that even between engines, the .1qt difference is no difference at all and not measurable on the stick. The i4 does have a chain to lubricate, while that compartment is dry, in the V6. I'd like to know if any i4 owners here use 4.4qts and where does it register on the stick?

I just changed my oil 3 weeks ago - using "Drew's current favorite oil- the Quaker State Ultimate Durability Full Synthetic.

I use 4.4 quarts....always, with a new filter. And it hits FULL on the dipstick. I never go over that full line. It's like crossing the streams- very bad.

Then again, that oil is so darn clean and light-honey colored I may be off on reading it.

I always get it right up to the full line, not over, with 4.5 quarts (V6). It's a good thing the Accord doesn't burn any oil, because I might need that extra .5 quart for the truck because it will burn at least a quart in just 4k miles. Sad part is the truck only has 70k miles on it.

Well, I've got nothing on why some fill up with 4.4qt and mine takes 5.

My oil filter is not larger than most. I'm approaching an oil change soon. I'm going with the QSUD that Rick mentioned. I'll take a pic of where it reaches on the stick.

You can dump all 5, just prepare for foamed up oil that's not really being pumped and lubricating the engine. I've overfilled once at the beginning of wrenching years ago. I had a problem with hard starting after that, had to drain back out. If it really doesn't matter, then car manufacturers wouldn't put low and high marks on the oil dipstick would they? Then I found that a lot of people just get lazy and empty the entire jug. Compensating for oil burning is a valid reason to overfill, but you have a different set of problems if oil is burning off quickly, like 1 qt./1000 miles.
It would take several more quarts after the oil was already at the fill line for it to be even remotely close to foaming.

How do you know this? And why take the chance? You don't have any place to keep the left over half quart? Is it so hard to add some later, if the motor consumes a little? I had to add the left over half quart in the truck at 3200 miles, and I didn't even hurt myself in the process haha.

As a matter of fact when I change the oil on my 4 cyl the front is usually on ramps and it drains overnight. That's probably overkill but my thinking is that gets as much of the dirty oil out as possible. When it's time to refill it takes in the neighbourhood of 5.2 litres to get to the top mark on the dipstick although the owners' manual listed capacity is 4.2 litres.
Curious...

I might let mine drain overnight next time. Wonder how much more comes out compared to waiting 20 mins or so.

Member "chris918" (and several of his other usernames, lol) is a proponent of the 5 quart jug for this reason. He strives for five- and I ain't talking veggies per day here.
If I had other usernames you'd be able to detect that.

But yeah, I've always just dumped in the entire jug and never had a problem. It does use a slight amount of oil between changes, like probably less than half a quart.

Just changed the oil. Put in 4 1/2 qts from a 5 qt jug, so that should meet the capacity of the engine with filter.
Waited a minute or so, checked the dipstick.
It's halfway between the Full and Low marks, and I still haven't started the car to saturate the new filter.
...
Started the car, let it run for a minute or so, shut it off.
Letting it set while I clean up my materials and tools. Will check it again in 15-20 minutes from now to top up if needed.

Edit (15 minutes later): Just checked it. It's just up to the Low mark on the dipstick now.

Edit2: 5 qts+4 oz. to get up to just touching the Full mark.

Chris918 knows best.. dump in the entire jug.

4.9qts for a change here. The other .1qt goes into the spare bottle in the trunk. Historically it got used throughout the life of the oil during that OCI. However, after changing my VTEC solenoid gasket i haven't had any leaks.
