If you spend (i.e., waste) any time on YouTube, you’ve probably seen the Motorweek Retro Review videos. I came across this one of the original review of the 1984 Honda Accord. We had one (blue DX hatchback, with A/C as a dealer add-on), and years later, it became my first car when I turned 17. Anyway, I’m currently reveling in automotive nostalgia:

And here is a photo of ol’ faithful, circa 1996:

Dam, never owned accords back then. For some reason my family thought Caprice Classics and Ford Taurses were better., 😢

Anyways great find. If you go to Keenan Honda In Doylestown PA, they have one of these in there 2nd floor Museum.

Looking at my old car again, I caught one detail I never gave much thought to - you had to use the car’s key to open the door to the gas cap (a vestige of the gas crisis of the 1970s, a security measure against people siphoning fuel out of your tank when you weren’t around).

And a secondary point…how about the days of standard-sized stereos, so swapping to better units was a plug-and-play process? I had a Denon AM/FM/Cassette deck that also featured a line-in for my Discman (and the obligatory binder of CDs in the back seat). And not pictured, when I got the car, my Dad replaced the factory speakers (which had paper cones) with Boston Acoustics in the front and JBLs in the back. A lot of kids had nicer cars than I did (for instance, my assigned spot senior year was between a girl with a BMW 325 and another with a Nissan 300Z, both bought new… although when it snowed one day, guess which of the three of us had no trouble getting out of the parking lot?), but I had a proper stereo system.

I see it was the ol' "blue on Blue on BLUE" exterior/interior option XD

Speaking of 'ole school...here's one of the reasons for the one key

“Could we have pills, and cook the corn?” So cool to see William Bogert again. That made my day.

And that’s a great point - many cars had separate keys for trunk, glove compartment, and fuel tank, so Honda’s “one key to rule them all” approach was a welcome innovation.

Here's their '84 Prelude video:

Just realized something while watching this... the vents in the tops of the door panels, are side window defrosters. Duuuh! How did I not realize that!

And here's the blooper reel where they put a 4WS Prelude in the ditch lmao

Good stuff!

(My personal favorite is when what I think is an Alfa Romeo... the little red convertible... goes off the track and just keeps going, mowing the weeds and rolling into the field)
