Hello everybody, this is my first post on the forum, as I am a first time Accord owner. Two months ago, I purchased a beautiful radiant red Accord Hybrid EX-L. I absolutely love everything about it! But yesterday, it died on me in the middle of a busy road...

I was having a usual drive home from work and enjoying the new car smell along with the plush quiet hybrid ride. I was going about 30 MPH down a congested road when suddenly a "Brake system problem. Brake performance may be reduced. See your dealer." message appeared in the gauge cluster.

The speed of my car fell to 8 MPH for a few seconds and would not increase when I hit the gas. After a few more seconds, the speed fell to 0 MPH. Traffic was whizzing by me. Vehicles were laying on their horn. I thought for sure I was going to get waffled in the middle of the road. I quickly put the car in park, turned it off, and turned it back on. THANKFULLY, it was able to accelerate after restarting. I was near a mall parking lot and pulled in, parked, and just sat there to gather myself for a few minutes.

The brake system error came up again while I was parked and idling. I turned the vehicle off again and turned it back on. All was clear. I was close to home, so I chanced it and drove home down the right lane of a big road so I could immediately pull into the shoulder if my Accord started to die again.

When I made it home, I was greatly disappointed and shook up by my car's untimely failure, but I was also relieved to be ok after having my car lose power in the middle of the road. This is what I get for 35 grand?!

So, WHAT GIVES?! I haven't driven my Accord since, because I feel like it's a death trap now. I feel so lucky that I wasn't driving on a major freeway when this happened. I'm taking it to the dealership on Monday and will have backup on the drive there. Forgive me if this "break failure" topic has already been discussed on the forum.

Any comments, advice, or input after reading this story?

For future reference, this would have been a good moment to use the hazard lights...

Curious to hear if you get a diagnosis. FWIW, we've had a similar issue with our new HAH at start-up, but turning it off and on resolved it.

Mileage and build date if you can. Thanks and Im glad your ok

Before you go to the dealership, I would advise you to check and possibly retrieve OBDII DTCs (trouble codes) from the system memory. This is for your protection because the dealer's reaction is unknown. Since it's the weekend, I think this can be done at your local AutoZone store. It is unlikely that such a glitch in the system would leave no trace. If the dearer says they don't find any fault, it's a problem for Honda. You received a warning while driving to see your dealer about this problem.

It’s a mass produced vehicle. Catastrophic failures can and will happen with any vehicle. That being said, it’s under warranty and will be fixed. DO NOT take it back until it’s fixed. It’s a safety hazard.

This happened to me yesterday!!!! I was driving and basically all kinds of warning lights came on including the same brake system warning you received and it slowed down, etc... I bought my 2023 Accord hybrid sport-L brand new on July 1st!! I did the same as you, turned off the car and then turned it back on. I happened to be 200 miles away from home so I ended up driving it home w/no issues. I also drove it today w/no issues. I called the dealership service and they acted like it was no big deal but they would "check it out" in December!

had similar issue during heavy rain my 23 hybrid stopped in the middle of the road. i didn’t drive through water or anything crazy just rain. when i told the dealer about it they just told me to go f myself. there are several safety issues i don’t have time to report. such as your doors are open but there’s no chime i once nearly backed up with my door open from one of my kids leaving it that way. the shocks are gone, same responsefrom dealer. multiple software issues not worth mentioning since all cars have these. another common issue reported widely by owners is ergonomics are inexistent, passenger front seat is fixed no tilting although it’s an electric seat. the arm rest for driver is way too low and steering wheel doesn’t stretch far enough which creates fatigue on drives over 30 minutes compared to my 25 year old audi. there’s a lot of pluses tho. fast car, quiet ride, beautiful exterior interior design. great cornering for a sleeper.

2023 Accord quits on highway. My 2023 Accord Hybrid was purchased in April. In August my wife was driving at 45 mph on a two lane county road when suddenly, the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and the car died. She could do nothing. No steering; no nothing. Could not be restarted. After havingg it towed to the nearest Honda dealer we were told that the battery was depleted but the alternator was functioning properly. "Bad battery." So with a new battery we accepting their diagnosis and were on our way....until December when the same thing happened again. Battery was drained; alternator good. After two weeks at the dealer, we are now being told that the ICM is bad. Well the ICM controls spark to the plugs. It has nothing to do with discharging the battery. Only logical answer is that there is a short somewhere draining the battery.

Honda needs to do something about this model. Too many similar occurrences. Someone is going to get seriously injured or killed. Can you blame my wife for not wanting to drive her car anymore? And by the way, it is the top of the line Touring model. Honda's reputation is on the line here.

Interesting that the dealer would say that since the hybrid does not have an alternator. I hope you get this resolved.

Unfortunately we do seem to have a lot of bots that post negative things and then never show up again. If you provide additional information and/or comments it will go a long ways towards getting advice. Also, please file a report with the NHTSA. That is how we get this resolved as it will put pressure on Honda.

The car quitting will not disable the steering.

The hybrid doesn't have an alternator.

Your story is not consistent with how the hybrid electrical system works. The 12V battery doesn't do much beyond keeping the low voltage system at a constant 12V. The hybrid battery starts the engine.

Your dealer sucks. Find another.

i can assure you im a real person, let me know if you have any questions about what i posted as my issues that Honda dealership has dismissed. idk what made you think thats AI, AI would likely be a tad more proper than that?

i could go as far as provide you with the accident report with my insurnace company when i backed up and ripped two of my doors out (well one door, the front door was ripped out because of the rear door), or the post video i recorded where certain warnings cancel each other out. such as seat belt warnings being more important than your rear door being wide open.

one of my replies was removed, trying again.
i have insurance report from when lack of warning ripped my two doors out. rear door was open, but the warning for seat belt cancels or superseeds the rear door open warning. the rear door hooked my front door and both got ripped out. i asked the insurance to reach out to honda about this since honda dealership is dismissive about such safety issues. i documented this with a video and can easily be tested on 2013 accords, i wont post video for fear of retribution by manufacturer, wouldnt be the first time a company tries to discourage negative reviews by suing for defamation. dont buckle seat belt, leave door open, start car and drive let me know result. drive through a mild puddle and watch car turn off. multiple reports of shocks on accords not lasting, let me know if i said something multiple people havent already reported.
