So, I make it no secret that I beat the living tar out of my Accord. Including, but not limited to, going WOT just after -0F cold starts at work. I started to get some "ticking" from the head area that the dealer discounted as the high pressure fuel pump. I decided to get an OA done at the 40k oil change just to make sure everything is OK. Plus, this winter was pretty harsh and, so was my right foot, I wanted to see what was going on in there. The results speak for themselves.

Car Mileage: 40,190
Oil Mileage: 10,277
Oil Type: Mobil1 0W-20
Oil Filter: Honda OE (The "crappy" one)
MM %: 5%

Hopefully this helps solve some of the mystery about the Maintenance Minder, too. (At least as it applies to synthetic oil)

Enjoy the read!

What % oil life on the MM?
5%, but it had been at 5% for a while. It was probably going to hit 0% in the next day or two.

I changed mine at 10,000 miles, MM had just kicked over to 15%. Now that the factory fill oil is out, I'll wait until it hits 5% next time. I put Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 in it. UOA's such as yours verify that these engine systems are very well thought out, and the MM does a good job at estimating OCI's.

How much oil (if any) do you add over the 10,000 mile OCI?

Looks good to me I would run out to 12,000, and if a second test at 12 showed I was still good it would be my mark.

If I can get some miles on I will try my first test at around 10,000 on the oil and see if it comes back as well as yours.

Thanks for sharing.

None. That being said, I put in 5qts at the oil change, not the 4.5 that Honda suggests.

How is that even possible? Lol
It probably isnt...lol

When I leave work there are the first two intersections you take your life in your hands if you dont pull out like you mean it. They are left turns into 45mph zones with not much visability. So I go WOT 2X just about every day on a cold engine (the 2.4L falls on its face without the VTEC shift when cold).

But, I seriously go WOT to redline at least one time everytime I drive my car.

5%, but it was going to flip to 0% very soon.

I was thinking of going the 12,000mi. But resetting the MM gets annoying by the time 5% hits. I will probably keep doing 5% oil changes until the powertrain warranty is up.

Be sure to share your results.

I'm going to save your awesome posting for all of those "Gotta change every 3000K miles because my dad and my grandpa taught me so it must be gospel". :grin

Thanks for posting this, Karfeek. I've only seen one other 9th gen 2.4l oil analysis online and, IIR, it looked pretty similar to yours. I'm still not gonna beat up my car 1st thing in the morning but I do think I can safely move away from my 7,500 mile OCI.

I'm sure we all appreciate you taking one for the team.

How much does this test cost? I also drive the hell out of mine. I'm curious.

5-10 years ago they were 20.00. I doubt they are much over 25.00 now. I spent a fair amount of money testing engines on cars and motorcycles I had. I learned that wet-sump motorcycle engines sheared oil like crazy, but, modern car engines are much easier on oil than I ever imagined. I'll probably change my Accord's oil every 10,000, even though it doesn't need it that often....it's just a nice, round number to tie my tire rotations around.

From a guy who currently works in the Honda test group. "Honda motors last a long time if you don't redline them when cold."

Just sayin

But couldn't we say that about any motor? I guess that I could start an argument that the OA shows no accelerated wear so there is nothing wrong. But I wont.

Also, did you burn any oil?

Down about 1/2 qt. I don't want to say it was burned, probably went thru the PCV system due to the high RPM driving.
