A moment ago, I was shocked to see that my rear windshield is shattered, uniformly, with no apparant impact marks. What possibly could be the reason?

Any tips on how to get it replaced? Experiences? Dealer vs indy etc.

Reason? Chicago.

I would NOT trust a dealer to replace it. Just as them how many they have replaced in the past 12 months, then ask the guys at Safelite how many they have done.
Since dealers sublet, Safelite could be the company they use.

Any reputable company should be able to replace it. New will be expensive, might be worth seeing if they can pull a good one from a yard and install it for you.

I've heard of sunroof explosions but not rear windows. Damn. If your insurance has glass coverage I'd look into that first, otherwise call an auto glass place and have it replaced. I wouldn't expect it to be more than $300 installed.

When they replace it ask if they know the cause of it cracking, looks like someone threw hot water on a frozen windshield.

You can't blame that on Chicago, c'mon you guys. Drive in certain parts of the city and maybe your car gets hit by a stray bullet, okay that I can see, but not that rear window breaking like that.
Just go to one of the main windshield repair places, they're probably going to have to order the rear window but that shouldn't take more than a day or two, for a town the size of Chicago it might be available the same day. I would think your share of cost would be about the same as for a front windshield, usually about $100, IF you have an insurance plan that includes windshield replacement coverage.

I will ask for quotes tomorrow and skip the dealers.

After further examination, I'm convinced that the class shattered by natural causes, definitely not by an object. The cracks are absolutely uniform and the glass stay perfectly in shape, until I slammed the door shut.
There was no defects I'm aware of prior to the shattering. It seems a case of rear winshield explosion.

The only thing I can think of is: temperature and inside pressure. The car is parked facing north, and today is almost the first day of good sun light in a while. The sun definitely had something to do with it. A lesson learned. In the future, I'll try to park in the shade.

Tempered glass can shatter on its own, usually doesn't happen with glass like that (relatively thin). In any case, the size of the defect or impact to cause the glass to shatter can be very small. Quite easy to break with a center punch actually. Should be an easy replace as long as they pay attention to the elec connection for the rear defrost.

$135.13 is an excellent deal for Honda glass installed. If they did a good install, definitely recommend them.

Happened to my wife..

My wife had a 95 Honda Civic back in the day. One day she was just driving down the road and the back window spider-webbed. She didn't hear any thing hit the window or notice any kids with BB guns.. .so it seems that maybe it was another case of spontaneous window shattering. Probably had some minor defect and the motion, or heat or something finally caused it to break.

No, that was the total paid, no insurance company was involved. My Honda only carries liability insurance as required by the law.

That garage is specialized in car glasses. They only do glasses and door locks. It's the "Jiffy Lube" of car glass replacement. No appointment needed. I called about quote around 11am, by 1pm the glass was replaced.
