I hate to inform you about this, but the timing belt idler pulley and the tensioner pulley were NOT replaced, not shown on the receipt. This is where dealer gives you that ~ $800 timing belt water pump job thinking you are getting a "deal." When you are into the engine bay that deep, you replace everything so you don't have to dig back in there again for years. I once paid that price when I was in my 20s when I didn't know anything about cars. You are better off buying all OEM parts for just around $350 and giving it to an independent shop to do so. 14520-RCA-A01, the hydraulic tensioner, listed on your receipt DOES NOT cost $226.88 . You've been fully gouged by that dealer. It is about $121 here at my dealer, https://www.hondapartsnetwork.com/oem-parts/honda-tensioner-timing-belt-auto-14520rcaa01 . And to be honest, you can find it for cheaper, I just recently purchase one for $85. They gave you that coupon to use to give you a sense of relief but it's a false feeling, because they really still make money off the job.

I think it is time now to change the timing belt. I asked the honda parts guy he said yes it is time.

Some dealers/shops probably suggest you need to replace the timing belt every time you get an oil change!! It's a scare tactic! People totally freak out when dealers tell them they have 5mm thickness of brake pads left. 5mm last over 20k or more miles but they say that to scare people who aren't well versed with cars, so they go for the job.

Attached is a copy of the invoice for replacing my timing belt on my 2013 V6 Accord. Whether you agree or not I needed it done is pointless, just trying to educate everyone on what I paid.
The timing belt was done at 31k miles?

To me, that invoice above highlights the point that not everyone- dealer, customer, independent shop, forum members, threads within the same forum, YouTubers, counter parts guys....can agree on what EXACTLY a "timing belt job" consists of.

My thanks to the member that posted it.

We should probably create a comprehensive "Timing Belt Job" thread listing all parts, costs, brands, etc...building on t-rd's post that I linked to earlier in this thread.

I worked for a dealer once that would not touch a timing belt job without also doing the water pump, belts, tensioners, idlers, cam/crank seals and thermostat/gasket. Replacing just the timing belt opened up too much liability for the dealer.

This was the list from my 2012 Pilot. I'm sure the parts / costs are very similar.

Timing Belt kit - Aisin TKH-002 - (includes: T-Belt, Water Pump, Gasket, Tensioner, Adjuster) $180.39 (Amazon as of 6/15/18) or $179.79 (Rockauto as of 6/15/18)
Thermostat - AISIN THH-009 Thermostat - $22.05 (Amazon as of 6/15/18) or $13.61 (Rockauto as of 6/15/18)
PCV Valve - Standard Motor Products V384 - $20.66 (Amazon as of 6/15/18) or $17.71 (Rockauto as of 6/15/18)
Drive Belt Tensioner - Continental 49461 - $124.79 (only on Rockauto as of 6/15/18)
Drive Belt - Bando 6PK2135 - $18.21 (Amazon as of 6/15/18) or $13.76 (Rockauto as of 6/15/18)
Spark Plugs - NGK DILZKR7A11G - $19.06 each, or $114.36 for 6 (Amazon as of 6/15/18) or $14.85 each, or $89.10 for 6 (Rockauto as of 6/15/18)
Honda Type 2 Coolant - I bought two gallons from my local Dealer for $34
Honda PS Fluid - $4

Has anyone had the tensioner prematurely fail in this TKH-002 kit?

Well the tensioner in the Aisin kit is supposed to be the same exact part as OEM if you buy it from a reputable place. Figures I get the one tensioner out of 1,000,000+ units that has a defect resulting in premature failure.

I just financed a used accord with a Honda dealer and I realized that the V6 models have to replace a timing belt. The owner's manual states that I should replace the belt around 60k mark in hot/cold conditions (I'm located in a hot area) but I also noticed people saying the belt can last around 100k. To anyone who owns a 9th gen accord, what would you recommend is best to do?

Well I hate to say it, but you opened a can of worms. Trust me you're about to get all sorts responses about this topic and why you should or should not replace before 100k. I have a 2013 V6 coupe and I replaced my timing belt early also. In short, MY opinion is do what you think is best for you and the car you're driving.

60k miles would be a "severe duty" change point... realistically it's done between 60k to 100k miles... I went through a similar exercise for my 2008 Odyssey a couple years back at around 80k miles. That ride has been everywhere from sea level to Pike's Peak and handled temps from Texas summers to polar vortex in Chicago, so I wouldn't get too hung up on doing it exactly at 60k miles.

The parts for this are fairly cheap for a 2016 v6, it's the labor that gets you if you don't do it yourself. A competent shop will check the belt, pulleys and water pump while they're in there doing their thing.

You didn't say what the current mileage was on your car, btw. I also agree you're going to get all sorts of answers to this so this is just my observation / anecdote :) ymmv

It's a little over 59k, I was just wondering at this time cause I don't like the idea of having to change a pricey part so soon and I was hoping to see if anyone's experience is similar to mine. But if it does need to be changed soon, anything else you guys would recommend me to change as well so I can get everything done at once?
