Hello all,

I have a bit of unfortunate news regarding my 2006 Honda Accord. The other night on my way to work, I was driving on the freeway minding my own business. All of a sudden, a large pickup truck flew by me in the left lane, kicking up (or dropping) a large rock in its wake. The rock made an extremely loud noise when it collided with my car, but it was only after arriving at work in which I was able to fully assess the damage left by the rock. It appears that the rock directly hit the left fender of my car, leaving a considerable dent. I also observed a smaller dent in my hood, and a chip in my windshield.

At this point, I am trying to decide what to do with the damage. I'm the type of person who likes to keep my vehicles in tip-top condition, so I would like to repair the damage. At the same time, I recognize that this is nearly a 14 year old car (which gets driven over 100 miles per day on the freeway). For this reason, maybe i'm better off leaving it alone.

Any advice on what I should do about the damage? Unfortunately, since this photo was taken, the ident in my fender is beginning to rust considerably. At the very least, I will have to do something about that.

Grind away the rust down to the metal, then touch-up paint it good with multiple layers then leave it. If just touch-up paint isn't good enough for you, you can get a whole spray can of paint from here, https://www.automotivetouchup.com/

But I suggest you fix the chip on the windshield with a resin repair kit immediately. That chip will grow into a massive long crack if you let it go. I used the RainX kit.

Don't spend too much on it, just repair the paint to prevent rust. I don't care about dents, I have not for years, you will get dents all over the place. Your other option is to get a used fender from a junk yard and just swap it out, that might be cheaper.

I would get the windshield fixed first, then maybe look around local junkyards or go online and find a new fender that matches yours. Before you do that however, you could go to a body shop and ask them for a quote to get your existing one fixed (along with the dent in the hood). But, I'm guessing you could get a used fender in good condition, for cheaper than fixing your existing one.

It depends on what your budget is for the damage.
To me, that's something I'd live with after touching it up.

You may not be that type of person.
That's probably $300-$450. total at any body shop.

I am the same way as you bro. I would stop by a local wrecking yard and see if they have the fender in the same color. If so? Just swap it out and you are done. If not, I would probably leave it alone. New fenders are cheap so you can also get a new unpainted fender, get the color coded spray paint for your car, and do the best job you can on painting it yourself. Few days ago, I replaced my rear bumper and today, a co worker backed into it. I am OCD about that stuff but sometime you just have to leave it the way it is.

Thank you for all of the helpful replies!

I have gotten the windshield fixed. Unfortunately, the location where the rock hit is still very visible from the interior of the car, but at least I know that it's no longer a safety hazard.

As for the fender and hood: I may check around to a few local junkyards to see if I can find an identical part. Beyond that, I probably won't go to the trouble of purchasing a new fender and getting it painted. As much as it pains me to drive around with a significant dent on my car, I accept that its a 14 year old Honda Accord LX, and probably isn't worth the expense.
