I went to look at a used 2007 accord ex-l for sale on craigslist. The car was in pretty good shape and it ran smooth. There was one major concern for me though. The left rear exhaust pipe was missing. When I looked under the car the entire left side muffler was gone. How much of a red flag is this? Is having 2 pipes a necessity? Thanks in advance!

Was it a V6 or I4? I4's had single exit exhaust from the factory, V6's had dual. If it's a V6 and it's missing the dual exhaust (the dual split happens after the rear tires, not a true dual) then that tells me either the owner had a custom exhaust they removed and did shoddy replacement work (where else did they do that...) or it was rear ended and the shop put the wrong parts in.

There are many 7th gen Accords out there for sale. I'd say look elsewhere if you're not sure about this. Doesn't sound promising to me.

I don't quite get what you're saying. Is there a pipe there, without a muffler attached to it? Or is there a cutout in the bumper, so you assume there was a pipe there before?

EX-L is i4. Single exhaust out back.

Sounds like my '05 4 cyl. coupe. When I was test driving it I asked the previous owner if it was ever in an accident. He told me someone bumped into the back of the car while he was stopped at a light. It cracked the rear bumper cover but didn't hurt anything else. He took it to the dealer for repair and apparently the dealers stock the V6 bumper cover because that one will work on either model. He elected to have them install that one instead of waiting for the single opening bumper cover to come in. My guess is that's what happened to the car you're looking at.

It's most likely a 4-cylinder model with the exhaust cutout cap/filler/whatever missing.
yep! thats my bet as well. Looks like he backed into something or someone hit him im the rear the pic shows what looks like a crease or crack at the top of the cutout the filler piece just popped out not a big deal. I would not call this a deal breaker as long as there is no frame damage and the price is right the bumper can be replaced if it bothers you.

I'm not as knowledgeable as some of the other folks here who say it shouldn't be a big deal. Still, just because it drives smoothly doesn't mean there's nothing wrong. Do you have a Carfax report? Clean title, service records?

If you can, take it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. I did this for my Accord and it helped a lot to have a second opinion look at the car. If the seller refuses this, then that is a red flag.

Good luck :)!

You never answered the important question, is it a 4 cylinder, or 6 cylinder engine? That will tell you whether the car originally came with two exhaust pipes or one. The fact that there are two cutouts in the bumper doesn't mean much.

The car has a clean carfax, zero accidents. Also I confirmed it is a 4cyl, not 6.

I really appreciate everyones responses to this thread, it helped a ton!

One last question if anyone knows, where can I order a replacement part for this? I looked up 2007 accord exhaust cutout but it comes up with a lot of things.

Thanks again everyone <3

Thanks everyone for your responses! Learned some new things. I was able to take a picture of it as shown.

The first picture is the left side. I have no doubt there was an exhaust here, the cut out is just too perfect

This 2nd picture is the right side, a little blurry but intact.

Like I said the car ran smoothly, is this a huge factor? Thanks again.
It could be. I'm guessing the thing might have been rear-ended and the body shop put on a bumper cover that's for a V6 which has two tail pipes. The I4 only has 1, on the right.

If this is in fact the case, the outside may look good, but under that cover could be mangled energy absorbers (a one-time-use item) and other parts.

On my I4, there is no cutout with a filler on the left side. It's solid vinyl or whatever the cover is made out of.
