Remote Start Not Working - ‘17 Touring

Tried to use the remote start the other day and it didn’t respond. I checked to make sure it was still enabled in the system and it was. I toggled if off and back on and it worked the very next time but no more. I did have an issue with the infotainment system freezing and basically doing a hard reset in which it took about a minute to start responding after starting the car. Maybe this is part of a bigger issue? Any suggestions on what to check next besides key fob battery/2nd fob and disconnecting and reconnecting the car battery? Probably will take it in if I can’t get it working.

Sounds like it might be a connection or software issue. Are you still under warranty? I'd think issues like that would be covered.

Well, it looks like it’s actually working intermittently. I thought toggling the setting off and on again fixed it before, but that must have been a fluke. If the other fob or battery connection doesn’t do it, I guess it’s off to the dealer.

I find the auto start to be somewhat fickle and doesn't always start. I haven't been able to narrow it done to any specific causes yet, other than if there's more than 1" of snow covering the entire car.

Unlike the GM systems I'm used to it seems you have to aim the fob just right to start the car. I can sometimes be walking up to it and try and start it without any success unless I hold the key a certain way. It's annoying.

I've learned the system's quirks and haven't really had an issue, but I admittedly do not remotely start the car very often.

I did try the Driver 2 fob and it has the same issues. with about 10 tries between them, neither would activate the remote start. I'll be making an appointment in the morning. I need them to investigate a rattle/chatter noise from the transmission/torque converter, too, as this noise I've heard a few times is now becoming more prominent.

Got the car back from the dealer today. They said the remote start worked every time they tried it. It worked twice for me before taking the car back. But now it's not working sitting in my driveway. Smh! They also could not identify the source of the drivetrain rattle. I'm thinking about trying the "magic reset procedure" that is disconnecting the battery cables and connecting them together. Maybe that will reset whatever is confused.

I think Honda has these cars "house broken" so they behave perfectly whenever they're at the dealer, regardless of the problem we're reporting. I took a drive this week with the dealer's tech for a annoying rattle in the cabin on my '16 Coupe and it didn't make even the slightest noise. Dropped him off at the dealer and within a block...rattle...rattle...rattle...

Things I've noticed about Remote Start on my Coupe is I have to be quick about pressing Lock-Lock-Hold and it's fairly sensitive to distance. A small difference in how far I am away from the car and it won't remote start.

My 2017 Accord EX-L remote start worked flawlessly all winter. This week, we had a cold snap and I tried starting the car with no luck. Tried both FOBs. Lights blinked when door lock button pushed but no blink, no start with start button pushed and held. Saw in another thread to go into vehicle setting and turn the remote start feature off then back on. This resets something. I did this and my remote start is working again from the house.

I figured out my issue with the remote start. I finally realized a pattern in my behavior. Occasionally, I would happen to be on a phone call when I got home. Instead of letting the car idle while I finished the call, I would either hold the shifter button down while turning the car off, or put in in neutral to keep the audio system on. It seems the remote start system sees this as an insecure shutdown and doesn’t allow remote start if the car was not turned off normally. Stopped doing this and it’s worked nearly every time since.

Hi, I know this is old but it still applies to all honda’s remote start systems.
You can only remote start a vehicle twice after every drive cycle.

Each instance is only for a maximum of 10 minutes but you can extend each of those times by 10 minutes if you send a remote start command while its still on (the extra 10 minute timer starts from whenever it is commanded, (for example: if it’s sent after 7 minutes of being on then the vehicle will stay on for another 10 minutes for a total of 17 minutes).

hope that clears it up for you as it still applies to the newer Hondas.

Well the thing is I have never had an issue with remote starting and I do it almost every time, (I live in Canada. I typically shut the car off the same way, where I leave it in neutral to keep running the music and then shift to park after. After I am done, i press the ignition button twice to shut off and go. So if its about that then that’s not the issue. Also, if you shut it off that way and then exit the car without fully turning the ignition off then of course it will not work. (Just for the sake of stating the obvious)

Then see if the cars arms the alarm upon locking the doors. There were many case of bad hood pressure switch.
You are right about that being common. If that was the issue, then that’s a different story. But most people also don’t know the details of how the remote start system works and the conditions it will and won’t work under. Just wanted to clarify.
