I just got a 2001 Honda Accord with only 53K miles. From what I can tell on the maintenance records the timing belt kit has never been done. It has been suggested due to age the belt be replaced. I know that most belts only have a shelf life of 6-8 years. So it does seem like I should have it replaced.
As I see it worst case scenario is a totaled engine.
Most places I have priced is around $1300-1500 to do the complete kit.
Is this a good price

$1300-1500 is the price I'd expect for using all OEM Honda parts. But if you go with something like an Aisin kit you can likely get it done for under $1k.

If you're willing, I know I'd personally be interested in knowing how long the belt components can last. You know, for science.

The official replacement interval is 7yr/100k miles I think. But I’ve seen folks here and elsewhere pushed it over 10 years, so it’s a conservative estimate.
Most likely it’s been done at least once at some point. I’d get it done again regardless if there is no record though. Like the post above, a reputable independent shop can do it for around $8-900, or you can get it done at a dealership for around $12-1500. Either way, I’ll get it done soon.

Late winter, 2015, a friend of mine asked if I could help with a timing belt change on his 5th Gen Accord. I think is was a 1996 model year.

We found no evidence that it had ever been changed.

IIRC, that Accord had something like 320,000+ miles on the original timing belt.

It was glazed, cracked everywhere, and had stretched quite a bit. I was surprised it had no fallen off or skipped a couple of teeth.

So, there's one data point for science.

Wow. I hope no one tries to break this “record” lol
